documento.
Natural resources
degradation
For more than a century the region has been subject to
degradation and continuous loss of natural wealth. This
process was driven chiefly by poorly oriented extractive use
of natural resources. In addition to the traditional
activities of extensive livestock raising and extractive
forestry, in more recent years negative impacts have come
from poorly planned agricultural expansion, petroleum
and gas exploration, and the large-scale infrastructure
projects that these activities require.
Because of the fragility of the Gran Chaco’s natural
resources and the difficult reversibility of many of the
region’s alterations, as well as the human pressures
currently underway, urgent steps are needed to conciliate
productive sector interests with the sustainable development
and conservation of the region’s natural resources through a
long-term vision such as that presented here in this
document.
