PROGRAMME
THE STAGE
During the month of July, music and academy
will not only come together in Santander
but also mutually reinforce themselves
and give force to each other. Outstanding
international maestros will share
their experience of music with their young
colleagues in a climate of proximity and
naturalness. This shared experience
starts in the classroom with the master
classes and the rehearsal but is brought
full circle on the stage. The organization
seeks to provide all that is necessary in
order for this artistic encounter to take
place under the best possible conditions
before the public of Cantabria who benefits
from evenings of great musical value,
many of which turn out to be truly magic.
In addition to a presentation at the Salle
Pleyel in Paris, the programming of the
Encounter includes a series of concerts in
two halls: Argenta and Pereda of the
Palacio de Festivales de Cantrabria, and
a major concert festival that extends to
the entire region. In addition to the concerts
at the Parainfo de la Magdalena of
the Menéndez Pelayo International University
and the Caja Cantabria Cultural
Center, both in Santander, this year the
residents of the towns of Arnuero, Castillo
de Siete Villas, Isla, Alfoz de Lloredo,
Cigüenza, Cabezón de la Sal, Castro
Urdiales, Comillas, Escalante, Laredo,
Los Corrales de Buelna, Marina de Cudeyo,
Setién, Gajano, Pontejos, Potes,
Puente Viesgo, Ramales de la Victoria,
Reinosa, Renedo de Piélagos, Reocín,
Santa María de Cayón, Santillana del
Mar, Santoña, San Vicente de la Barquera,
Torrelavega and Vega de Pas will
have an opportunity to enjoy the music of
the Encounter.

DEBUT OF THE YOUNG
From the solo recital, to full orchestra,
and chamber groups of different nature,
Cantabria will enjoy a very complete
repertory that will take us from the magic
of the counterpoint to Bach’s rhetoric and
from the peak of Haydn’s classicism to
the modern spirituality of Oliver Messiaen,
the great composer whose centennial
we will be celebrating this year.
The first results of the Music for a School
project will be presented in this edition of
the Festival. The purpose of the project is
to try to bring the young virtuosi closer to
the music of their time. Paloma O’Shea,
President of the Albéniz Foundation and
Director of the Encounter has commissioned
a few works to some of the most
outstanding composers still active that,
without diminishing the technical and
artistic requirements, will create music
specially conceived for the young musicians
of the Reina Sofía School of Music
and other of our pedagogical programmes.
Thus, in this Encounter we will have
the great honor of listening to the absolute
debut of Stockhausen’s Taurus for bassoon
solo, and David del Puerto’s three of
the Five Poems by Javier Alfaya. Also, a
selection of Fabián Panisello’s Etudes for
Piano will be presented.
SANTANDER IN THE
WORLD AND THE
WORLD IN SANTANDER
For years, the Encounter has made of
Santander a meeting point for young promises
and established maestros of the
international renown. In this VIII edition
the musical world will continue to move
closer to Santander but, additionally, the
Santander Encounter will go out into the
world with a presentation at the legendary
Salle Pleyel in Paris. There, the French
public will have occasion to get to know
the work of the Encounter represented by
the performance of the Freixenet
Symphony Orchestra under the baton of
Vladimir Ashkenazy.
