EU Decision number ED/169/2012 dated 19 December 2012 added Lead Monoxide (EC number 215-267-0,<br />
CAS number 1317-36-8) to <strong>REACH</strong> Annex XIV as a substance of very high concern (SVHC). Material<br />
declarations for certain <strong>Diodes</strong> <strong>Inc</strong>orporated products declare Lead Monoxide as a substance exceeding<br />
0.1% by weight is present within the die glass passivation and/or glass encapsulation.<br />
Under the <strong>REACH</strong> regulation, glass is classified as a UVCB substance (substance of unknown or variable<br />
composition, complex reaction products or biological material) containing such elements as silicon, calcium,<br />
sodium, potassium, magnesium bonded together by oxygen; these elements are bonded into a noncrystalline<br />
molecular structure with completely different properties to the starting raw materials. Glass is not<br />
a mixture of compounds such as Si02, Na20, CaO, B203, PbO, etc.<br />
Since glass itself is not considered hazardous and is not included in the SVHC list, there are no obligations<br />
to communicate information according to Article 33 of the <strong>REACH</strong> regulation concerning SVHC in articles<br />
and related to lead monoxide in glass.
