secretion by mouth, precocious regurgitation,
crisis .of asphyxia, fulness of the
epigastrium, constipation, dehydration
and lost of weight. Aspiration bronchopneumonia
is also a characteristic finding,
that locates initially in the right upper
lobe and that was found in 6 cases
on admission.
The evolution is brief, 7 of cases died
during the first week of life. In all cases
bronchopneumonia was the cause of
death.
The clinical diagnosis is easy because
symptoms are very typical. In order to
verify it, are used esophageal catheterism
and roentgenologic examination with lipiodol.
Endoscopy is difficult to perform
at this age of life.
The treatment is surgical and it consists
in the closure of the fistula and in to perform
an end-to-end anastomosis between
the upper and lower segments of the esophagus.
Since earlier the operation is
done, the post-operative prognosis is better.
Advances in thoracic surgery have
permited numerous survivals in the last
10 years.
