CAPUCCINO FIZZ Bluetooth and its impact on our society Hello everyone. Well when I was thinking of what to write this article on, and the first thing which struck my mind was the topic I have chosen, and this was not because I am a tech savvy fanatic who cannot think of a life without Bluetooth, but because I had no clue how Bluetooth connected devices work , what do they actually need , whats the technology used. All I knew was that I can transfer pictures and songs from my friend’s cell to mine really quickly. The bluetooth, according to me, is the funniest invention. Firstly, we walk around talking like zombies and very few people realize that there is a bluetooth. It looks like you are talking to yourself or complaining to God! Secondly, the blue light that flashes reminds me of some cartoon character, a character that has suddenly got this bright idea. Well so heres a short and sweet article which I hope shall clear many of our doubts … Ipshita First and foremost the Bluetooth we know that today even an average technologically involved person has heard about “Bluetooth”. The apparent name of this chip is derived from the 10 th century Scandinavian king, Harald Bluetooth, who was historically known for uniting various unorganized kingdoms. Similarly, Bluetooth is specialized to unite many competing electronic standards under one main specification. With Bluetooth it is possible to be in another room and still be able to access another device with no use of wires. When two Bluetooth equipped devices come within 10 meters range of each other, they can establish a connection together. And because Bluetooth utilizes a radio-based link, it doesn't require a line-of-sight connection in order to communicate. Your laptop could send information to a printer in the next room, or your microwave could send a message to your mobile phone telling you that your meal is ready”. So basically, this single chip replaces human communication altogether! The Bluetooth Special Interest Group, or SIG, is a group of companies working together to promote and define the Bluetooth specifications. The Bluetooth SIG was founded by five companies to develop the Bluetooth concept as a possible wireless technology standard, which are Ericsson, Intel, IBM, Toshiba and Nokia. Other companies like Microsoft, Lucent, 3Com and Motorola later joined the Bluetooth SIG. Bluetooth’s goals expanded to include standardized wireless communications between any electrical devices and created a notion of Personal Area Network. Some basic facts about Bluetooth are that it is a wireless technology which eradicates lots of wires around our pc. It has become so popular and widespread because the initial cost of implementing it is very low. The technology of Bluetooth centres around a 9mm x 9mm microchip, which functions as a low cost and short range radio link. A Bluetooth device consists of a radio unit, a link control unit, and a support unit, where the link management takes place. 11
CAPUCCINO FIZZ The interface of a Bluetooth device consists of the Radio and Baseband layer, and the Link Manager Protocol (LMP). The Radio is responsible for transmitting data via radio waves over the air. The Baseband, which has both soft and hardware, controls the radio and is responsible for lower level encryption. The Link Manager Protocol is in charge of link setup, authentication, and link configuration. The minimum number of devices communicating is 2 units, which are referred to as a point-to-point connection. Any more than 2 units are called a point-to-multipoint connection. Using two or more of these units forms a personal-area network (PAN) or piconet with one master, which is the controlling channel – the other units are called slaves. In a single room max of 7 blue tooth devices can be connected with each other. The process of establishing links in order to transfer data at a future time is called a pairing. For authentication, the verifier (either master or slave) sends a random number to the claimant, which in turn calculates a response, including the secret key. Both devices share the same secret key. Bluetooth v/s Infrared :Infrared is a “line of sight” technology, meaning a direct connection is needed from the transmitter to the receiver. One of the main downsides to infrared, however, is that it is a one-to-one technology, meaning that you can only send data from one device to another, such as a personal digital assistant to a computer, but not able to send data from a laptop to a computer.The problem with Bluetooth is that Infrared communication is already the standard, and even though it tends to be less reliable, the average user might tend to be skeptical about accepting a new standard. Bluetooth was originally created for the businessman on the go, therefore being a lot more convenient for them rather than the average computer user. Security is also a problem. Bluetooth's discovery protocol lets devices automatically find and start interacting with each other, unintentionally exposing access and data to unauthorized users. The effect this will have on our society :the integration of the Bluetooth chip poses several threats to the average working individual thus harms our economy. For example, suppose the Bluetooth chip is utilized in the average supermarket. One near futuristic( well well) goal for this chip is to allow mobile phones to read product item barcodes, calculate the monetary total for groceries, and then provide automatic payment while pressing only your ATM code on your PCs. Although, one may immediately be in awe even in disbelief of this idea, this particular transition to electronic “cashiers” would deduce the payroll dramatically. Maybe, businesses would enjoy their increased profit, but what about those individuals left without jobs? Hence, the type of work needed would require highly trained individuals to maintain the electronic system. The manual labor class of society would be left without occupation perhaps not having methods of educating themselves to evolve with the adaptation. What are the consequences? Well, the electronic takeover cuts the payroll causing additional unemployment and reduces the cash flow and expenditure throughout the economy at large working people to earn and invest money. Therefore, this microelectronic chip would perhaps inflict more harm than economic health if put into our everyday use. By the way if any of you are too inspired or have a brilliant idea for use of the Bluetooth technology just remember that it's a trademarked name, owned by a consortium. It's also patented technology. You have to get their permission to use the technology and the name. 12
