2INTRODUCCIONLa <strong>madera</strong> es uno de los materiales de construcción más antiguos que conoceel hombre. Aún hoy <strong>en</strong> d la, <strong>en</strong> paises como U.S.A., Canadá, Alemania, etc., se sigueconstruy<strong>en</strong>do profusam<strong>en</strong>te <strong>en</strong> <strong>madera</strong>.La tecnologla, los nuevos materiales derivados de la <strong>madera</strong>, la experi<strong>en</strong>ciay los procesos de protección de ella, han permitido construir grandes estructurasque han llevado a la <strong>madera</strong> a competir con otros materiales <strong>en</strong> usos que antes leestaban vedados.Es así como <strong>en</strong> la actualidad se construy<strong>en</strong> <strong>en</strong> <strong>madera</strong>: Gimnasios, Iglesias,Hangares, Edificios, Galpones, etc., con luces que antiguam<strong>en</strong>te le eran prohibitivas.Conoci<strong>en</strong>do los difer<strong>en</strong>tes <strong>sistemas</strong> <strong>constructivos</strong> <strong>en</strong> <strong>madera</strong>, es posible lograrun arco con 100 m. de luz, marcos de 40 m. de luz y vigas rectas de 30 m. deluz, todo lo cual da un sinnúmero de posibilidades a la arquitectura.Si a lo anterior agregamos el confort, estética y aislación que aporta la <strong>madera</strong>,obt<strong>en</strong>emos la explicación del por qué este tipo de construcción es tan popular<strong>en</strong> países desarrollados. Si<strong>en</strong>do nuestro país productor de <strong>madera</strong>, es lógico p<strong>en</strong>sarque un material de uso corri<strong>en</strong>te <strong>en</strong> nuestras construcciones debe ser precisam<strong>en</strong>te,la <strong>madera</strong>. A fin de dar a conocer las v<strong>en</strong>tajas de este elem<strong>en</strong>to como materialde construcción, el INSTITUTO FORESTAL, ha decidido pres<strong>en</strong>tar las caracterlsticasfundam<strong>en</strong>tales de los principales <strong>sistemas</strong> <strong>constructivos</strong> que actualm<strong>en</strong>tese usan <strong>en</strong> el mundo.La finalidad del pres<strong>en</strong>te docum<strong>en</strong>to es señalar un camino, especialm<strong>en</strong>te alas regiones forestales, a fin de que, aprovechando el recurso que está a su alcance,construyan con un material que esté más de acuerdo con la topografía y paisajede la región.En las láminas que sigu<strong>en</strong> se dan las especificaciones y características de lossigui<strong>en</strong>tes <strong>sistemas</strong> <strong>constructivos</strong>: Madera Laminada y Encolada, Sistema ConstructivoHB, Sistema "poste y viga", y Sistema prefabricado de paneles.Algunos de estos <strong>sistemas</strong> ya han sido aplicados con éxito <strong>en</strong> el país, segúnse da a conocer <strong>en</strong> el Capítulo E: Aplicaciones <strong>en</strong> Chile.Se concluye el texto con nociones teóricas del comportami<strong>en</strong>to de la <strong>madera</strong>con el fuego, a fin de <strong>en</strong>t<strong>en</strong>der de la mejor manera, el éxito alcanlado por lasconstrucciones <strong>en</strong> <strong>madera</strong>, <strong>en</strong> otros países.
