14.14.114.214.314.414.515.15.115.215.315.416.MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONSAfter use and before performing maintenance, unplug and disconnect the batterycharger (see sections 6, 7 and 8).Use a dry cloth to wipe all battery corrosion and other dirt or oil from the terminals,cords, and the charger case.Ensure that all of the charger components are in place and in good working condition,for example, the plastic boots on the battery clips.Servicing does not require opening the unit, as there are no user-serviceable parts.All other servicing should be performed by qualified service personnel.Moving and STORAGE INSTRUCTIONSStore the charger unplugged, in an upright position. The cord will still conduct electricityuntil it is unplugged from the outlet.Store inside, in a cool, dry place.Do not store the clips on the handle, clipped together, on or around metal, or clipped tocables.If the charger is moved around the shop or transported to another location, take care toavoid/prevent damage to the cords, clips and charger. Failure to do so could result inpersonal injury or property damage.TROUBLESHOOTINGPROBLEM POSSIBLE CAU<strong>SE</strong> REASON/SOLUTIONNo reading on the ammeter.Charger is not plugged in.Plug the charger into an AC outlet.Ammeter reading stayshigh.No power at the receptacle.Clips are not making a goodconnection to the battery.Connections are reversed.Battery is defective (will notaccept a charge).Battery is severelydischarged.Wrong battery voltage.Check for open fuse or circuit breakersupplying AC outlet.Check for poor connection to batteryand frame. Make sure connectionpoints are clean. Rock clips back andforth for a better connection.Unplug the charger and reverse theclips.Have battery checked.Continue charging battery for twomore hours. If problem continueshave the battery checked.Verify the voltage settings on thecharger are correct.Ammeter reads less thanselected charge rate whencharging a dischargedbattery.Extension cord is too long orwire gauge is too small.Weak cell or sulfated platein battery.Battery is only partiallydischarged.Use a shorter or heavier gaugeextension cord.A sulfated battery will eventually takea normal charge if left connected.If the battery will not take a charge,have it checked.Continue to charge the battery.• 8 •
PROBLEM POSSIBLE CAU<strong>SE</strong> REASON/SOLUTIONThe charger is making anaudible clicking sound.Circuit breaker is cycling.The settings may be wrong. Checkthe charger settings.Charger makes a loud buzzor hum.Charger will not turn onwhen properly connected.Battery is defective.Shorted battery cables orclips.Severely discharged battery,but otherwise it is a goodbattery.Reverse connections atbattery.Transformer laminationsvibrate (buzz).Shorted Diode Assembly orOutput Rectifier Assembly(hum).AC outlet is dead.Have the battery checked.Circuit breaker cycles when currentdraw is too high. Check for shortedcables or clips and replace ifnecessary.The battery may not want to accept acharge due to a run-down state. Allowcharging to continue until batteryhas a chance to recover sufficientlyto take a charge. If more than 20minutes, stop charging and have thebattery checked.Shut the charger off and correct thelead connections.No problem; this is a normalcondition.Have charger checked by a qualifiedtechnician.Check for open fuse or circuit breakersupplying AC outlet.The battery is connectedand the charger is on, but isnot charging.Poor electrical connection.Clips are not making a goodconnection.Check power cord and extension cordfor loose fitting plug.Check for poor connection at batteryand frame. Make sure connectingpoints are clean. Rock clips back andforth for a better connection.17.17.117.217.3BEFORE RETURNING FOR REPAIRSWhen a charging problem arises, make certain that the battery is capable of acceptinga normal charge. Double check all connections, the AC outlet for a full 120-volts, thecharger clips for correct polarity and the quality of the connections from the cables to theclips and from the clips to the battery system. The clips must be clean.When a battery is very cold, partially charged or sulfated, it will not draw the full ratedamperes from the charger. It is both dangerous and damaging to a battery to forcehigher amperage into it than it can effectively use in recharging.When an UNKNOWN OPERATING PROBLEM arises, please read the complete manualand call the customer service number for information.
