Information Technology - creating future technology already today Engineers are very much appreciated in Finland. More and more information technology experts are needed, as IT covers broadly areas in both working and everyday life. Although the society is highly internationalised, the challenges of information technology are also local and lasting. This is the case also in the Vaasa region, where a strong and international concentration of energy industry offers interesting job opportunities for IT experts. The degree programme in Information Technology at VAMK University of Applied Sciences prepares students for demanding IT work in the industry and public sector. Since the field is developing rapidly, we emphasise the ability to adapt to the transforming duties. A VAMK educated Bachelor of Engineering is able to develop and create new products and applications for the needs of businesses. The diverse specific areas include C, Java and TCP/IP applications, mobile telephone systems, Internet programming as well as embedded systems. Advanced professional studies emphasise internationalisation and project work. 18
Studying in a foreign language in your home country calls for courage and an open mind, but it can turn out to be the most profitable investment you make for your future career. The degree programme in Information Technology gives the students a good readiness to work in multicultural work communities abroad as well as in international companies operating in Finland. Foreign degree and exchange students are studying in the same groups. Students are, thus, introduced to foreign cultures and their language skills which are regarded highly by employers are improved as well. The Robot Soccer Team: Friends, Practice and Language Skills One of the fascinating specialisations in Information Technology is the robot soccer project, which brings together specialities like mathematics, programming, electronics, telecommunications and mechanics under one continuous project. A practically-orientated and challenging project prepares the students for an easy shift into working-life and making careers with an eye on contacts to local large-scale industrial enterprises and software houses. By familiarising oneself with real software, telecommunications and electronics challenges of the enterprises, the student gets a realistic idea of industrial product development and the latest trends of the field. Open Source technologies and the Linux environment are particularly utilised in studying systematic design processes and project management. Projects also acquaint future IT-engineers with cooperative skills and working in a multicultural environment. The goal of the international robot soccer community is to have robots play against a human team in 2050 – VAMK has taken up the challenge! VAMK is working-life oriented Luis Alvarez Iglesias began his studies in the degree programme in Information Technology in 2011. He moved to Vaasa from Spain and wanted to find a study place where he can both study and work at the same time. Your motives to choose VAMK? When I moved to Finland my goal was to study for a better future. I needed a university that offers degrees taught in English and so I did not have many options. VAMK not only offers the possibility to study in English, it is also working-life orientated and I considered that very important. VAMK students are ready to start a professional career without the embarrassing experience of making rookie errors due to ignorance. In VAMK, I think everything has a meaning. Your experiences of practical training? As a first year student I still haven’t done my practical training but my friends tell me that practical training is a very important step where they have learnt to apply their knowledge. I have also heard that many people get permanently employed into their practical training place. I’m very much looking forward to my practical training period. Your opinion of the degree programme? It is fantastic how most of the teachers get really involved in our development. The lectures are often given in such small groups that the students can participate actively. What is best in Vaasa? Vaasa is a friendly and cosmopolitan place, something that I really like in a city. But the best thing about Vaasa is that when the spring comes it gets green everywhere. I really love the summer in here. Taking walks in the forest, long bike rides or spending time with friends sitting on a terrace where it gets warm but not too hot. The best memories of the studies? My studies at VAMK have been like a second chance into having a promising working life. Besides this, my class-mates, my new friends from many different countries are something that I enjoy every day. Your plans for the future? Continue my studies at VAMK. My goal in studies is related to automotive industry. The growing implementation of embedded systems that can still be improved in many ways makes this an attractive field for me. A dream of mine would be my own company as a partner of one of the automotive clusters around the world. I would like to improve the interactivity of a car with the users in a safe way. ICT, software engineering and embedded systems design for energy industry You have an opportunity to apply for IT related tasks in working life, such as design, programming, marketing and maintenance, independent entrepreneurship and international tasks at export companies. Your future career may involve professional tasks of a product development engineer, project manager, IT specialist, programmer, electronics design engineer, telecommunication design engineer or a sales engineer.
