FOR BETTER COCOA,
FOR A BETTER FUTURE
If we want to enjoy chocolate in the future, it is vital to produce cocoa sustainably.
Improving the availability of this fine raw material and making sure that it comes
from responsible sources is close to the heart of Fazer. The company has launched
farmer programmes that sustain the environment as well as the well-being of the
cocoa farmers and their communities.
"In the beginning of 2017, we
achieved one of our most important
goals: I 00 % of our cocoa
comes from responsible sources",
says Majlen Fazer, cocoa
and chocolate expert at Fazer.
One fourth of the cocoa Fazer
purchases comes from Ecuador
and three quarters from West Africa.
Fazer sources cocoa through
UTZ, Rainforest Alliance and
Fairtrade Cocoa Programme as
well as through their own farmer
programmes.
"Combining these two sourcing
methods is the best option for
us for several reasons. Nearly
80 % of the world's cocoa
farmers do not work in co-operation
with certification organisations,
which means that
direct farmer programmes are
needed to complement certified
cocoa", Majlen Fazer says.
BETTER
LIVING
CONDITIONS
Family-run small farms produce
the majority of the world's cocoa.
"It is important to make sure that
all farmers have the possibility to
produce cocoa sustainably", Fazer
says. With direct programmes it
also possible to train local people
to monitor, for instance, whether
child labour is used. This is more
efficient than occasional inspections.
mental aspects of cocoa farming
and support the farming communities.
Especially women have
been encouraged to take part in
training and thus improve their
standard of living. "The cost of
implementing direct programmes
is higher than that of purchasing
certified cocoa, but we see this as
a necessary investment towards
a reliable supply in the future",
Majlen Fazer says.
75,000
NEW COCOA
SEEDLINGS IN
NIGERIA
Fazer has initiated a programme
in south-eastern Nigeria that
allows the company to help farmers
improve their income. The
programme includes some 4,500
farmers. By the summer of 2018,
farmers in the programme had
planted 75,000 new cocoa seedlings.
"We also support community projects
based on the farmers' needs",
Majlen Fazer says. "We have built
wells and schools and helped
women increase their income
level."
Improving occupational safety
is part of the work. Fazer has
trained the farmers and delivered
400 units of protective equipment
and 2,000 safer and more efficient
tools for opening cocoa pods.
