Dans tous les sites étudiés, la colonisation spontanée par la faune
s’est réalisée très rapidement et s’avère relativement typée, souvent caractéristique
de ce nouvel habitat. Ces milieux conviennent plutôt aux
espèces du milieu lotique.
Une fois la carrière abandonnée, les peuplements animaux se
modifient au fil des années. Ces transformations s’inscrivent dans le
processus de succession écologique, le fonctionnement global de
l’écosystème aquatique se modifiant petit à petit, les perturbations
engendrées par la fluctuation du niveau d’eau étant un paramètre
influant nettement la productivité de l’écosystème et les peuplements
animaux.

The development of gravel quarries has started in Burgundy in the 1950’s,
leading to the creation of numerous shallow open waters of a relatively small
size, which water level varies with that of the groundwater. After studying some
open waters, a synthetic document was produced and this article summarizes
its main conclusions focusing on animal colonization of open waters, the population
evolution in time and the ecological characteristics of temporary ponds
in quarries.
In all sites studied, the spontaneous fauna colonization happened very
rapidly, and is quite distinctive, often characteristic of this new habitat. Such
ecosystem is mostly suitable to lotic species. Once a quarry is abandoned, fauna
population evolves year after year. These changes are part of an ecological succession
process, the global functioning of aquatic ecosystem modifying itself
little by little, disturbances generated by the water level fluctuation being an
important parameter influencing ecosystem productivity and fauna
populations.
