Eugene von Guérard est l’un des premiers et le plus important
peintre de paysage actif en Australie au xıx e siècle.
Né à Vienne, il se rend en Italie en 1826 et s’installe un
certain temps à Rome où il étudie avec le peintre de paysage
Giovanni Battista Bassi. En 1836, il intègre l’Académie
d’Art de Düsseldorf. Là, il étudie avec le peintre de
paysage Johann Wilhelm Schirmer. Pendant les douze
prochaines années, von Guérard voyage beaucoup visitant
les Pays-Bas, la Suisse et la France. En 1852, il se rend
en Australie avec la volonté d’y trouver de l’or. Après plusieurs
années de travail dans les mines, il retourne à Melbourne
où il s’établit comme peintre de paysage. Il se rend
dans les contrées sauvages australiennes accompagnant

Eugene von Guérard was one of the earliest and most
important landscape painters in Australia. Born in Vienna,
he was the son of the artist Bernhard von Guérard. In 1826,
Eugene von Guérard traveled to Italy where he spent time
in Rome studying under the landscape painter Giovanni
Battista Bassi. In 1836, von Guérard entered the Dusseldorf
Academy of Art. Von Guérard’s teacher there was
the landscape painter Johan Wilhelm Schirmer. During
the next dozen years von Guérard traveled extensively
in Europe visiting The Netherlands, Switzerland, and
France. In 1852 von Guérard was lured to Australia with
the prospect of finding gold. After several years of work in
the gold fields he returned to Melbourne and established

régulièrement des expéditions scientifiques et reproduisant
dans ses carnets d’esquisses la flore et la géologie
de ce continent. De retour à Melbourne, il utilise ses
esquisses pour réaliser des tableaux. Ceux-ci sont toujours
admirés aujourd’hui pour leurs visions romantiques
et l’acuité de leur rendu botanique. En 1870, von Guérard
devient le premier conservateur et professeur de l’École
d’Art de la National Gallery de Victoria.
La présente esquisse Un manoir dans les Alpes est
probablement exécutée lors d’un voyage de von Guérard
en Suisse. Ici, l’œil de l’artiste retranscrit la lumière du
matin qui illumine le bâtiment par la gauche et qui touche
les montagnes se dressant derrière les tours. Suivant les
conseils de son maître Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, von
Guérard exécute des esquisses en plein air afin de préparer
les compositions faites en atelier.

himself as a painter. He traveled throughout Australia’s
wilderness often accompanying scientific expeditions
documenting the continents unique flora and geology in
his sketchbooks. Once returned to Melbourne he turned
these sketches into paintings of the outback that are still
admired today for their romantic vision as well botanical
accuracy. In 1870 von Guérard became the first Curator
and Master of the School of Art at the National Gallery
of Victoria.
The present oil sketch by Eugene von Guérard was
probably executed on one of the artist’s trips to Switzerland.
Here the artist’s keen eye notices the raking morning
light illuminating the buildings from the left, and touches
the mountains standing beyond the two towers. Following
the advice of his teacher Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, von
Guerard executed plein air paintings on paper as studies
for studio compositions.
