Au gré des rivières de la Charentonne et du Cosnier, vous découvrirez un ensemble exceptionnel de maisons à pans de bois des XV e et XVI e siècles et des ruelles d’un autre temps … Un circuit balisé, « l’Eau, la Pierre, le Bois », disponible à l’Office de Tourisme vous aidera à découvrir ces merveilles cachées. D’ici là, laissez-vous séduire par : Located in the heart of Normandy, Bernay has the appeal of a charming country town and a leisure place. Enriched by its history and preserved architecture, Bernay offers a typically Norman style place of living that charms residents and tourists who are passing through. Following the Charentonne and the Cosnier rivers, you will discover an exceptional great number of fifteenth and sixteenth timber frame houses, lanes and little ways from very old times… You may also discover these hidden marvels through the tour « Water, Stone and Wood », which is available at the Tourist Office. By then, let yourself be seduced by : L’ABBAYE, L’ABBATIALE NOTRE-DAME ET LE MUSÉE DES BEAUX-ARTS THE ABBEY, THE ABBEY-CHURCH NOTRE DAME AND MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS The various buildings of the site, which were modified in the XVII th century, house today the town hall, the court of justice and the Fine Arts Museum. Settled in the former abbey dwellings (end XVI th century) with an access from the public garden, the museum presents a rich collection of paintings, sculptures and also remarkable pieces of Rouen faïence. 2 Abbatiale Cet ensemble architectural qui abrite aujourd’hui, la mairie, le tribunal et le musée des Beaux-Arts a été remanié à la fin du XVII e siècle. Installé dans l’ancien logis abbatial (fin XVI e siècle), auquel on accède depuis le jardin public, le musée abrite des collections riches et variées de peintures, sculptures, et un important fonds de faïence de Rouen. Véritable joyau de cet ensemble, l’abbatiale Notre-Dame, fondée au début du XI e siècle par Judith de Bretagne, grandmère de Guillaume le Conquérant, est l’une des premières églises de style roman en Normandie. Elément incontournable du patrimoine bernayen, les siècles passés ne semblent pas avoir eu de prise sur la majesté et la beauté de cet édifice. A ne rater sous aucun prétexte ! Most valuable and beautiful among the buildings is the abbey-church Notre Dame, founded at the beginning of the XIth century by William the Conqueror’s Musée des Beaux Arts grandmother, Judith of Britanny. It is one of the first Romanesque style churches in Normandy. Although the building is more than ten centuries old, its elegance and majesty haven’t been altered and make it the inevitable landmark to be seen in Bernay.
