ISAIAH ZAGAR’S DIVERSE BODY OF WORK
has documented a myriad of private and public experiences since
the 1960’s. Sometimes clearly narrative, while other times more
abstract, all of Zagar’s mosaics contain the essence of the artist and
have a lively sense of spontaneity.
This exhibition portrays how his mosaic techniques have evolved over
the years and takes a closer look at the experimental nature of his
work and his continued willingness to grow and learn as an artist.
Like lava flowing over a landscape, Zagar pours his colorful cement
on top of an arrangement of tiles, folk art, and found objects
contained in a wooden frame. Once hardened, Zagar lifts the piece
from the work area and exposes the completed product. Shown
together with his more traditional mosaic works, his lava flow
process is different because the finished art is not revealed until the
very end. The result celebrates how play and discovery are important
elements of his artistic practice.
“I love the poetry of it, to have such a tribute, a
lava flow, an electrical storm turning the world
upside down. I’m getting closer to the lava flow
with this group of small works. I’m getting closer,
closer, and closer. I hope I never get there.”
