METROSUNDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 20203Bangladesh envoy visits ailing freedomfighters at army hospital in DelhiNEW DELHI : The newly appointedBangladesh High Commissioner toIndia, Muhammad Imran yesterdayvisited a group of Bangladeshi freedomfighters, who are undergoing treatmentat the Army Hospital here.The High Commissioner met thefreedom fighters, mostly in their 60sand 70s, and enquired about theirwellbeing and the treatment they arereceiving at the health facility,Bangladesh mission in New Delhi saidin a statement.A total of 29 ailing freedom fightersarrived in India last week from Dhaka.Fifteen of them got admitted at thespecialized Army Hospital in NewDelhi and another 14 are receivingtreatment in the Command Hospital inPune.The Indian government is providingtreatment to the war veterans under a5-year scheme under which 100freedom fighters from Bangladesh willreceive treatment in India every year.The scheme was officially launchedby Indian Prime Minister NarendraModi during the visit of Prime MinisterSheikh Hasina to India in April, 2017.The gesture came at a 'Sammanona'programme, where the visitingBangladesh Prime Minister personallyhonoured the families of Indiansoldiers who sacrificed their livesduring the nine-month longBangladesh's War of Independence in1971.During the interaction with the HighCommissioner, the freedom fightersexpressed satisfaction at the treatmentand care they have been receiving at thehospital.Later, the Bangladesh envoy also metthe Commandant of the Army Hospital(Research and Referral), Lt. Mostafizur Rahman Sumon, a reporter ofonline news portal, was attacked allegedly by the supports of thecouncilor candidate of the DNCC's Ward No. 34 SheikhMohammed Hossain Kokhon in the city's Rayerbazar area.Banani slum fire extinguishedDHAKA : A fire that broke out at the capital's Banani TNTslum early Saturday was extinguished after frantic efforts ofabout three and a half hours, reports UNB.Rasel Shikder, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defenseheadquarters, said that the fire broke out at 3:28am.Twenty-two firefighting units rushed to the spot andextinguished the fire around 7am. A five-member committeehas been formed to investigate the reason behind fire andestimate the damage, he said.
