Vascular, Non-vascular, and Fungi Species Codes
S-Rankings (ANHIC – 2006)
Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Program 4
Version 2.1
Species are ranked provincially by the Alberta Natural Heritage Information Centre (ANHIC). ANHIC
rankings are based primarily on the number of locations where they have been detected, population size
and trend, life history and reproductive strategies, range and current threats is used when available.
Documents for element rankings can be found at:
http://www.cd.gov.ab.ca/preserving/parks/anhic/flashindex.asp
S1: ≤ 5 occurrences or only a few remaining individuals
S2: 6 – 20 occurrences or with many individuals in fewer occurrences
S3: 21 – 100 occurrences may be rare and local throughout its range, or in a restricted range (may
be abundant in some locations or may be vulnerable to extirpation because of some factor of its
biology)
S4: Apparently secure under its present conditions, typically >100 occurrences but may be fewer
with many large populations; may be rare in parts of its range, especially peripherally
S5: Demonstrably secure under present conditions, >100 occurrences, may be rare in parts of its
range, especially peripherally
Other:
SU: Status Uncertain often because of low search effort or cryptic nature of the element; possibly in
peril, unrankable, more information needed.
SH: Historically known, may be relocated in the future.
SNA: Species Not Assessed
SNR: Species Not Ranked.
SE: Exotic Species (Non-native to Alberta)
SX: Species believed to be Exterpated
?: Rank Questionable.
A tracking and watch list, comprised of S1, S2, and some S3 ranked species, has also been developed to
keep track of these species which appear rare and/or are of conservation concern. Species that appear on
the tracking list are highlighted in RED and species on the watch list are highlighted in YELLOW.
