REGIONS AND PROVINCES OF ITALY
There are 20 regions and 95 provinces in the Republic of
Italy. Five of the regions (Sardegna, Sicilia, Valle d'Aosta,
Trentino-Alto Adige, and Friuli-Venezia Giulia) have special
autonomous constitutions, dictated by geographic and minoritylanguage
considerations (regioni a statuto autonomo). The
remaining 15 have regular constitutions (regioni a statuto
ordinario).
The first province named after each region listed below is the
seat of the regional government; the ones that follow it are given
in alphabetical order. The Province of Trento of the Trentino-Alto
Adige Region is considered autonomous.
Please note that all place names below are spelled the Italian
way. Some of the spellings differ significantly from the accepted
English names, e.g., Livorno in Italian is Leghorn in English. If
there is any question about the proper spelling of the English
version, please consult an Italian dictionary.
