Metamorphosis
“Ombra di donna” - “Shadow of woman” - Oil on canvas - cm 30x39 - 2012
“Ombra di uomo” - “Shadow of man” - Oil on canvas - cm 29x49 - 2012
In Roya’s paintings there are many faces: the face of pain suggested by timeless and
ageless red colours, all sharing a deep, intense and sharp pain; the face of blood, expressed
by dripping colours, slipping into many streams, as if showing that no parts of
the body are immune to suffering; the face of violence, with signs of colour mutilations
and contaminations. These unexpected faces appear on the canvas disfiguring or staining
bodies, outlining troubled and lonely figures: figures that seem to question themselves
and interrogate the environment: searching for a contact, a bridge, an answer.
Her condition as a woman reveals a reality that is often torn and inadequate: it shows
stains, cracks, gaps filled with a pain that will never be mended. And with this, the colours
and the shapes of her works become stylized and attack the viewer, imploding in a dialectics
which is difficult to consider as static and conclusive.
And her pain often screams (waving flags, ideals, perspectives in the wind) and at other
times becomes a quiet, a voiceless and indecipherable sobbing.
And yet, in this world of codes and messages, the answers are not the ones that are required.
And her research continues, unsatisfied, and among new horizons appears the
theme of hope, suggesting a major restructuring and an unconscious desire to get away
from pain, in order to acquire confidence in the future.
The colours, which have become cold, do not disengage the viewers. Quite the opposite:
they overwhelm them, drawing them more and more closely into the canvas, in an empathic
emotion, full of anxiety and bursting excitement.
Her blue is the sky and a brushstroke of hope, her easels (yet to be installed and finished)
are there to remind us her commitment as a honest and concerned artist, aware
that liberation (in terms of gender, politics, culture) is yet to be addressed and acquired.
And the face of femininity recurs in almost all her works: with figures that are broken or
disrupted, curled up and wrapped, with half-faces worn by perfection. Some other time,
instead, it is the purity and sweetness of the primary colours to bring a trace of hope
in a present lived as a chessboard, in well-defined architectural spaces in which the reassembled
body merges with the spirit, keeping its identity unchanged.
All these figures are immersed in an environment in which freedom is denied, a form of
imprisonment where the only glimmer comes from the tentative opening of a window
overlooking the world.
And the story continues with the face of motherhood: a face represented by bodies
joined by powerful bonds that, at times, seem to be severed.
Roya is a woman who you listen to and appreciate for her research, her experiments,
her way of expressing beauty that is faith, rational project and immediate momentum.
When Roya paints, she gives the impression of entering the canvas and blending with its
colours, of being immersed in a natural dimension that she does not want to leave.
In fact, she seems to leave on the canvas her unconscious and a part of herself.
senza tempo, senza età, ma con il comune denominatore di un dolore vivo, acuto, penetrante;
Painting is my friend. I can open my heart to it without having to restrain my ideals. From
painting I gain serenity and freedom in my mind, without being repressed, without being
denied.
Mixing my colours, they tell me when it’s the right time to give shape to my thoughts.
Colours control my mind and let me know when it’s the right time to translate an
abstract concept into a physical action.
In colours I seek something that sometimes cannot be found, but searching for its most
intimate meaning – my personal truth – absorbs my body and my mind. This effort
becomes more and more frantic, almost frenzied, while I try to define the deep meaning
of reconstruction, that is building again my own freedom.
My paintings are bare, naked, and yet they are far from erotic. These are pict ures trying
to communicate, to depict the depths of the human soul.
My identity is ever changing, but never on the verge of collapse under the pressure of
stimuli, but it is strengthened by difficulties and is eager to rebuild always to aspire to
new knowledge.
I do not paint what I see, but I paint what I feel. I transfer my emotions on a canvas.
When I'm about to finish a painting, I feel like the cocoon of a silkworm, when, although
exhausted, it pushes with all its residual forces to change into a butterfly.
astratto in azione concreta.
ambire sempre a nuove conoscenze.
