specie nelle zone alpine viene fatta risalire all’epoca
specie alloctona, a tamponare in primis earidurre
fiore all’occhiello dell’agricoltura cuneese.
Each territory is characterized by peculiar traits able
to define it unique or rare, and certainly different
from neighbouring areas in some aspect. The Province
of Cuneo, one of the oldest in Italy (founded
in 1859), of which I am honoured to be the humble
responsible for the agricultural policies, is one of
these special territories, forming particular landscapes,
and rich of wildlife and natural resources. This
land has offered in the past, and continues to offer
now, an affluence to the inhabitants and the Province
of Cuneo represents the 42% of the regional agricultural
production. Indeed the agriculture is more than
other economic sector linked to the environment and
to the history, also in the aspects of daily life style.
In this scenery the chestnut culture is spread in the
landscape and in many agricultural ecosystems of
the Province. The introduction of the chestnut in the
mountains of the Alps go back to the times of the
Roman legions when staple food was needed by the
troops to conquer the Central Europe. But not only
the history of the books is worthy of attention for
posterity. The existence comprises also the ordinary
day life, the day life of the country telling us about
the chestnuts as staple food in the diet of the inhabitants
of the Province of Cuneo. This history, linked
to the chestnut, accompanied our ancestors for centuries
and our grandfathers and fathers until the Second
World War. With time the chestnut changed its
role: from food in the daily diet to a good income
for growers. The production of chestnuts in the Province
had periods of happiness when large quantities
of produce were exported in more or less distant
markets, confirming the tradition of excellence of
the production, that now has obtained the brand of
quality “chestnut of Cuneo”. Unfortunately during
the times the chestnut culture in Cuneo province was
injured by pests and diseases and now a new pest,
the gall wasp, is seriously damaging the chestnut
ecosystem. To reduce the attacks of the wasp recently
has been introduced from Japan an antagonistic
insect for the biological control of the pest. In this
frame, the Province of Cuneo, through the activity
of the sector of agriculture that worked in distinguished
way and in cooperation with other institutions,
is obtaining excellent results in the control of this
new pest. The target was and remains to maintain the
chestnut culture as a buttonhole of the agriculture in
the Province of Cuneo.
