È un disturbo neurodegenerativo con etiologia<br />
defin<strong>it</strong>a (mutazione del gene MECP2). Colpisce<br />
quasi esclusivamente le femmine ed esordisce tra i<br />
6 e i 18 mesi, dopo un periodo di sviluppo normale,<br />
comportando importanti defic<strong>it</strong> nelle abil<strong>it</strong>à<br />
motorie, cogn<strong>it</strong>ive, linguistiche, una perd<strong>it</strong>a delle<br />
competenze interattive, una decelerazione della<br />
cresc<strong>it</strong>a della testa, un uso stereotipato delle mani<br />
ed un r<strong>it</strong>ardo mentale grave o profondo.<br />
