La quantità totale di ferro contenuta nell’organismo umano è<br />

intorno a 4 g (adulto di 70 Kg): 3 g nelle sedi funzionali dove<br />

L’ingresso del ferro nell’organismo avviene a livello del<br />

duodeno e della prima parte del digiuno, dove <strong>il</strong> 10% del ferro<br />

contenuto negli alimenti (prevalentemente animali) viene<br />

assorbito. Diete ricche di ferro come quella americana (circa<br />

15 mg/die) consentono un apporto giornaliero di 1-1.5 mg/die<br />

di ferro. È molto frequente un apporto alimentare insufficiente.<br />

Si calcolano più di 800 m<strong>il</strong>ioni di <strong>per</strong>sone carenti di ferro,<br />

soprattutto neonati, bambini e adolescenti, donne in età fert<strong>il</strong>e<br />

e in gravidanza. Condizioni ricorrenti di <strong>per</strong>dite aumentate<br />

sono: <strong>il</strong> ciclo mestruale (15-40 mg ogni ciclo normale, con un<br />

fabbisogno aumentato da 1 a 4-5 mg/die), st<strong>il</strong>licidio ematico<br />
