known to date in Italian territory, defined by its current political borders, citing a total of
279 species, 5 subspecies and 12 varieties united in 81 genera and 40 families. Another 34
incorrectly identified species were exc\uded, while the identification of another 7 seems
uncertain.
The present work lists 35 more species than the Flora ftalica Cryptogama (without
counting the subspecies and varieties). However, the present work exc\udes 4 species
which are not on Italian territory and 12 which are synonyms; another 8 are placed with
exc\uded taxa and 5 wlth dubious species. This brings Zodda's total of species to 244
which are currently considered val id.
The present work, like the Check-list oJ the Mosses oJ ltaly by Cartini Pedrotti
(1992), aspires ta offer a natable contributian to the knowledge of Italy's true Iiverwort
patrimony, ane of the richest in Europe, and thus to serve as a starting point for further
updates and more in-depth studi es.
