Map <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study area indicating <strong>the</strong> abbreviation used <strong>the</strong> countries <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> isl<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>s for whicha separate list is included in <strong>the</strong> checklist (cf. also Table 1).The lengthy duration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project is explained by its complexity <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>the</strong>fact that <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> OPTIMA Bryophyte Commission had o<strong>the</strong>rconcurrent activities <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> responsibilities. However <strong>the</strong> experience gained during<strong>the</strong> project will serve as a sound basis for <strong>the</strong> checklist <strong>of</strong> mosses still to beproduced.Criteria for <strong>the</strong> list <strong>of</strong> accepted namesTaxonomy <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> NomenclatureThe list includes published names <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> records to <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> May 2007.The checklist by Grolle & Long (2000) was <strong>the</strong> basic reference work for acceptednames in Europe <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Macaronesia. We have made some exceptions to this list in<strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> more recently published taxonomic papers, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> we have added <strong>the</strong>names <strong>of</strong> taxa from Afric<strong>an</strong> <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Asi<strong>an</strong> countries that were outside <strong>the</strong> geographicalscope <strong>of</strong> Grolle & Long’s list. We have also included some names that are notcited in Grolle & Long’s list in view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir frequent use in <strong>Mediterr<strong>an</strong>e<strong>an</strong></strong> areas<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>the</strong> lack <strong>of</strong> consensus in recent literature on <strong>the</strong>ir taxonomic value. For example,Grolle & Long (2000) cited very few infra-specific names. We took <strong>the</strong> viewthat <strong>the</strong> varieties <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> subspecies <strong>of</strong> some polymorphic taxa that have been recognizedin relatively recent studies merited inclusion (e.g., those <strong>of</strong> Bazz<strong>an</strong>ia trilobata(L.)
