However,checkmate is much easier to achievewhen we have an advantage inmaterial, namely more pieces.Combinations of tactical motifs thatforce a gain in material occur invirtually every game, and the mostimportant of these motifs are basedon some kind of double attack .However, double attack is mostcommonly used to describe a positionin which one piece attacks twoundefended pieces simultaneouslyand only one of those threatenedpieces is able to save itself. It goeswithout saying that it is rare that in asingle move one's opponent can saveor protect two attacked pieces. Let'slook at an example.White has just played 1. l:'i:dS,creating a double attack on thebishop and knight. One of the twopieces will be captured on the nextmove.We have already noted that adouble attack is very often impossibleto meet. However, this is not alwaysthe case; in certain positions a fleeingpiece can protect another.In this position, which is almostidentical to the preceding one, Blackcan save both pieces with the simplemove 1 ... ii.d7.There is also the 'double threat'motif, which arises when at least oneof our attacks does not involve thethreat of material gain, but insteadanother type of threat such ascheckmate.29
