JAM – JAMAICA
Jamaica confirmed their re-emergence as the pre-eminent football nation in the Caribbean when
they retained the Digicel Caribbean Cup in Martinique at the end of 2010. It was the Reggae Boyz
third triumph in five years and their fifth overall. As the holders they qualified automatically for
the finals where they won all three group games in the Stade en Camee in Riviere-Pilote with a
team based around a number of professionals playing in Major League Soccer. New York Red
Bulls’ Dane Richards put the Jamaicans ahead in the semi-final against Grenada although it took
and extra-time winner from Jamaica based Troy Smith to see the Jamaicans through to a final
against Guadeloupe. With their opponents playing in front of a partisan crowd in what practically
amounted to a home fixture, Jamaica went ahead through Omar Cummings, fresh from his MLS
triumph with Colorado Rapids, but they conceded soon after and it finished 1-1. In the penalty
shoot-out Jamaica scored all five of theirs before Jean Luc Lambourde shot wide to hand the cup
to the Reggae Boyz. There was no such joy in Caribbean Club Championship with Jamaican clubs
concentrating instead on domestic football where Harbour View won the 2010 championship ahead
of defending champions Tivoli Gardens whilst Boy’s Town beat Humble Lions 3-2 to win the Cup.
