'Scenes from Nigeria' was written in 1960 for the Nigerian Independence Celebrations. There are three scenes - a 'Pastorale', where the melody is original and therefore unusually long for an African melody; a 'Highlife' scene featuring the most popular dance in West Africa, and a 'Blues' scene, reflective in character and having no connection with the Blues known in American music. This work was broadcast by the BBC Welsh Orchestra on October 2nd, 1965 during the Commonwealth Arts Festival in England.
