Chamber Ensemble Taigu

Chamber Ensemble Taigu Rhyme Clarinet, Violin, Violoncello and percussion Score and parts 9780193866973 Taigu is the Chinese pronunciation of the Japanese word Taiko (fat drum). Although the tradition of taiko drumming has existed in Japan for many centuries, its origins can be traced back to the taigu drumming tradition that grew out of Buddhist doctrines and courtly ceremonies from China. In this 3 movement work, Zhou Long explores the energy and the spirit behind this unique art form, in which organized rhythmic materials generate a dramatic and powerful music. 12 minutes Tales from the Cave Huquin & percussion quartet Huquin solo: Erhu (tuned in d1-a1), Banhu (d2-a2) Percussion 1: xylo, glock, crotates, gongs, cym, sharp blk, wood block, bongos, BD Percussion 2: (with bow), vib temple blocks, crash cym, tom-tom Percussion 3: (with bow), mba, gongs, wood block, sus cym, tom-tom Percussion 4: tbells, mark-tree, hand gong, wind gong, tamtam, claves, Chinese BD Score and parts on hire 9780193865266 Tales from the Cave was inspired by the art of the Mogaoku grottoes in the ancient town of Dunhuang in western China. The most popular form of music indigenous to this region is the huar, a folk-song type current among a number of nationalities. The huar is actually a kind of mountain song. The music begins with an adagio introduction. Percussion instruments create an expanded space to enhance the range and color of the huqin. This is soon followed by a section with the banhu in fast tempo and dance rhythm. In the middle section, the erhu’s playing takes on a mountain song quality, with a mystical aura in the background provided by the percussion. The last section starts with dense rhythms and tension is gradually intensified to reach a climax and finale. 13 minutes Tales from the Nine Bells Chamber Ensemble cl, vln, vla, pno Score and parts 9780193399662 Based on the Chinese folk legend of bells that ring out untouched by humans, this work gives a haunting and atmospheric narrative of this well-known myth. Percussive piano techniques, glassy string sounds, and a highly expressive clarinet part - representative of the wind that carries the ringing of the bells - make for a delicately coloured, gripping work that brings to light the largely unexplored nuances of the instruments. 12 minutes The Ineffable Western & Chinese instruments fl, perc, pipa, zheng. vln, vc Score and parts on hire 9780193865211 The Chinese character for The Ineffable means subtlety or mysterious experience. It represents the abstract, unworldly and idealistic tendency in medieval Chinese thought. The first section starts with single note repeated patterns on various percussion instruments and plucked instruments, along with harmonics and bass pedal tones on the string instruments. A duet follows on the piccolo and xylophone in high register and leads to harmonic vibrato tones on the plucked instruments. The repeated pattern continues in all the parts, while the dense rhythm forms the first climax in which the bass voice is emphasized. A duet between the alto flute and marimba follows. The glissando notes on the pipa and zheng, with the colorful background of percussion and strings create a mysterious atmosphere. The repeated patterns create a feeling of continuity and continuousness. 15 minutes Valley Stream Western & Chinese instruments di, guan, zheng, perc Score and parts on hire 9780193865280 Valley Stream is written for quartet of Chinese instruments combined with western percussion instruments. Zhou Long writes “my goal in the work is to preserve the idiomatic nuances of traditional Chinese music while experimenting with instrumentation, performance techniques, rhythm and sonority.” 9 minutes Wu Ji Piano & 2 percussion Score and parts 9780193865655 The title of the work, Wu Ji, comes from ancient Chinese philosophy: “Wu” means “nothing” or “the lack of.” “Ji” means “polarity” or “infinity,” that which is beyond time and space; its presence precedes that of anything in the universe. (The percussion instruments required are: marimba, tam-tam, high blocks, Chinese opera gongs, wing gong, crotales, mark-tree, bow chime, vibraphone, blocks.) 10 minutes 10

Solo Instrumental A Set of Chinese Folk Songs Solo cello or viola or violin Cello score 9780193556911 Viola score 9780193556935 Violin score 9780193556959 Conceived as a set, these eight songs are drawn from several Chinese regions (Shaanbei, Shaanxi, Yunnan, Jiangsu, Sichuan, Hunan, and Shanxi) and represent the three main genres of mountain song, work song, and the more structured performance song aimed at professional singers. In this new arrangement for solo viola the music has been carefully refashioned for Western instruments, with writing that includes stylistic bowing and fingering to match the original style. Suitable for students at early to intermediate level, these compelling short pieces are accompanied by illuminating programme notes with a synoposis of each song. 12 minutes A Set of Chinese Folk Songs Solo piano Score 9780193805125 After the theme on a slow Mongolian folk-tune is stated, there are nine variations that traverse different styles, keys, speeds, figurations, and durations. The work is perfect for concerts or as a teaching tool with intermediate students. 8 minutes Confluence Solo flute Score 9780193407763 This piece combines techniques from traditional Chinese music and Western classical music, drawing on the flute’s rich history in both traditions. Using the full range of the instrument, a variety of extended techniques, and a wide range of dynamics, it is both virtuosic and characterful. 5 minutes Partita for violin and piano Violin & piano Score and part 9780193864115 ‘Partita’ for violin and piano consists of four movements inspired by Northern Chinese folk tunes, including mountain songs and working songs. Lyrical melodies contrast with technically demanding lively passages for both the piano and the violin. 20 minutes Su (Tracing Back) Flute & harp Score 9780193865129 The Chinese character “su” has the meaning of tracing back to the source or recalling ancient times. SU was inspired by the distinctive qualities of the ancient Chinese q’in, a seven-string plucking instrument similar to the zither. 7 minutes Taiping Drum Clarinet & piano Score and part 9780193408661 Taiping Drum for violin and piano was originally composed in 1983. This version for clarinet and piano was adapted by Professor Jun Qian in 2013. It draws on pentatonic folk tune material and is in rondo form.
