2013-14 Foundation

2013-14 Foundation Summary Wyncote Foundation Through the generosity of the Wyncote Foundation, Pathway’s Creative Arts Program includes a vibrant Drama Program. This year, students learned about themselves and others through performances of Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The generous gift of ,000 provides theatre experience and a unique educational environment that results in social and emotional growth and academic achievement. Pathway’s Language Arts Program consistently ties lessons that are learned in rehearsals to creative writing assignments, and strengthens the students’ integration of theatre and academic experience. Judith Haskell Brewer Fund, of The Community Foundation serving Richmond and Central Virginia The Community Foundation Serving Richmond and Central Virginia honored Pathway with a grant in the amount of ,000 from the Judith Haskell Brewer Fund. Ms. Brewer believed in uplifting the world through beauty, science, arts and education. As she appreciated nature, Pathway will endeavor to help students to value nature’s lessons and will use this gift to create ‘outdoor classrooms’ along Pathway’s Wellness Trail. Genuardi Family Foundation The Genuardi Family Foundation supported operational cost within the Career Education Program with a grant of ,000. As part of the Career Education Program, every two weeks, students receive a stipend for work done at one of the 14 job sites, as a way to reinforce positive work behaviors. This grant helped Pathway to provide a “payday” and underscore the importance of working hard, completing tasks on time and working closely with others…all the things that make a great employee! Child Development Foundation The Child Development Foundation supported the Student Self-Advocacy Program. With a grant of ,100, the evidence-based program, Bully Proof Your School, was purchased. This program will position our students for success as they learn how to keep themselves safe at school and in their home community, and learn how to successfully advocate for themselves. Environmental Community Service Award: Manko, Gold, Katcher, Fox, LLP & Wawa Pathway’s Horticulture Program and current organic garden provided the inspiration for a campus project that will include a one kilometer walking trail and teaching stations positioned along the way. The trail will encourage multisensory discussions focused on science, creative expression, play, socialization, fitness, and much more. Pathway’s garden and trail proposal captured the attention of Wawa and the environmental law firm, Manko, Gold, Katcher, Fox, LLP. Pathway received their Environmental Community Service Award of ,000 which will be used to create Pathway’s Wellness Trail, with construction to begin in spring 2015. The Montgomery County Foundation/MBF Fund The Hot Spot Café was developed through the generosity of The Montgomery County Foundation/MBF Fund with a grant of ,000. This café creates a campus retail experience for students to develop skills needed to serve customers. Students developed customer service skills while learning about job functions and how to run their own business. The Quaker Chemical Foundation The Quaker Chemical Foundation supported the school’s Science Program with a grant in the amount of ,500. The money was used to purchase equipment and materials that enhance discussions pertaining to biology, chemistry, physics, and environmental science. Darden Foundation Pathway’s lunch program was bolstered through the generosity of the Darden’s Restaurants Community Grants Program. This ,000 contribution helped to ensure that Pathway students can have a nutritious lunch, regardless of their ability to pay. Dolfinger-McMahon Foundation The Creative Arts Program was enriched with a ,000 grant from the Dolfinger-McMahon Foundation. This money was used to bring Musicopia to Pathway, with musicians engaging students in a hands-on experience in rhythm, vocal expression and movement.
