Editor FROM THE C H R I S T I A N S C H W A L B A C H Bouquet d’Émeraudes clip from Van Cleef & Arpels It is an oft-embraced catchphrase meant to instil ethical and moral confidence among shareholders, suppliers and employees alike: corporate responsibility. And it is practised, in various forms, by companies large and small who are as keen to showcase their principled stances and standards as they are their products and services. In some sectors, enterprises that were hitherto heedless in how they comported themselves, be it environmentally, socially or otherwise, have so embraced this common currency that they have made it a central tenet in how they do business. Take the world of high jewellery – specifically the sourcing and mining of precious stones – and consider, for a moment, all the tangibles, ranging from accountability and community to energy, suppliers, processes, people and the natural environment, that its footprint impacts. Then add the insalubrious business of conflict and you have all the ingredients for angst in the boardrooms of the diamond, gemstone and jewellery industries. Thankfully, as the zeitgeist prizes empowerment and the changes that it is engendering, both the enterprises who source the raw materials and stones and those who showcase them (call it mine-to-market), are making their production and sourcing methods more transparent. As our fashion editor-at-large Avril Groom reports on page 84, in the world of emeralds, this level of unambiguousness in the chain of custody has improved both consumer confidence and the bottom lines of those who purvey the breathtaking creations produced by Mother Nature and those fine craftsmen who inhabit her terrain. And that’s a collaborative model we can all be proud of. THE CARVED BLACK This issue features the Centurion moniker carved into marble by Italian stone experts Lithos Design.
