STYLE & BEAUTY A SEASONAL COMPENDIUM TO SARTORIAL FLAIR, ENCHANTING JEWELS AND HAUTE HORLOGERIE Rather than the cutting-edge world of Formula 1, Chopard (chopard.com) is devoted to vintage car racing, celebrating Italy’s famous Mille Miglia rally each year with a special limited edition. This year’s Classic Chronographs for men and women take design cues from cars that ran the race between 1927 and 1940. The slim cursive fonts and the counters, in particular, are reminiscent of 1920s-era dashboards, while the pushers and crown evoke vintage chronographs, and the rubber straps feature the pattern from the 1960s Dunlop Racing tyres. PHOTO © CHOPARD Revved-Up Watches Inspired by the world of motoring, watch companies are creating some of the world’s most sophisticated – and lightweight – timepieces. LAURIE KAHLE reports The love affair between petrolheads and watches traces back to the dawn of the 20th century, when drivers started placing timers on their dashboards. This natural affinity is based on emotion as well as function, since watches, particularly chronographs, were used to time races. But the connection goes well beyond motorsports, as anyone with an appreciation for mechanical engineering recognises the parallels between a watch movement and a car engine. By the mid-20th century, watch brands such as Heuer (now TAG Heuer) were timing premier races and naming models after them – Heuer’s enduring Carrera and boxy Monaco, and Rolex’s legendary Daytona, for example. Today, these prolific partnerships vary in the amount of genuine collaboration between the two disciplines – ranging from design and engineering teams working together to watch designers simply using the cars as inspiration.
