Wrathall, who writes about art, travel and design for the Financial Times, among other publications, found several advisers willing to speak, and her piece offers a rare glimpse behind the gilt-edged curtain that is often, she says, “as much, if not more, about selling, maintenance and admin than buying”. Mark C O’Flaherty “It has been strange to see common sense and genuine style referred to as a trend,” says the London-based photographer and writer of Sotto Voce Style (p32). “I don’t think anyone over 30 should wear anything with a logo or text on it, and overt branding makes me suspicious. The best menswear is all about a level of quality you can feel with your eyes closed, and a cut that won’t date, and which looks great on you regardless of your age.” Scott A Woodward Having first visited in 2006, the Manila-based Canadian photographer returned to the little Philippine island a second time for See You in Siargao (p80). “Although the island has certainly changed over the past 17 years,” he remarks, “the magical spirit and palpable energy that I felt all those years ago endure – a true testament to the unique symbiosis that exists between her residents and the enchanting island.” John McNamara Rovinj and Opatija are two Croatian hotspots with very different histories but plenty in common, as Centurion’s associate editor discovered for A Tale of Two Towns (p22). Chief among these similarities is a fierce pride in being the best of the best, and when it comes to seafood, they might have a point. “From salted sea bass to the finest octopus I have tasted in Europe, the fruits of the ocean are spectacular here,” he says,” Emily Nathan “Mallorca has undergone its share of makeovers,” says the Copenhagenbased writer, who explores the former party destination’s recent rediscovery of its cultural roots in Mallorcan Revival (p17). Thanks, in part, to a spate of new hotels whose architecture and approach honour Mallorcan traditions and heritage, the lush Balearic island “is witnessing the birth of a new era, in which its native beauty – natural, cultural and archaeological – is embraced, rather than suppressed”.
