1 3 2 1 VAN GOGH: POETS AND LOVERS LONDON This year marks the National Gallery’s 200th anniversary, and as a part of the yearlong celebration, more than 50 works of Van Gogh will be on display, including the iconic Sunflowers and Van Gogh’s Chair from the gallery’s own collection, revisiting the vital life stages and visual inspirations of one of the world’s most famous artists. 14 Sept – 19 Jan 2025 ART ESSENTIALS A shortlist of 2024’s leading events for art lovers. By Hiroko Kamogawa 2 BIENNALE OF SYDNEY Artistic directors Cosmin Costinaș and Inti Guerrero are embracing diversity and multiplicity in the realms of history, community and the arts. Ten Thousand Suns is the name of the 24th Biennale of Sydney, during which Australia’s latest arts and community centre, the 38,000sq m White Bay Power Station, will make its debut in the Inner West district. 9 March – 10 June 3 NOIR & BLANC HONG KONG The first-ever exhibition at M+ in Hong Kong dedicated solely to the realm of black-and-white photography, the show features more than 170 photographers in a oneof-a-kind exploration of the idiosyncratic aesthetics of photography through the art form’s leading names, including Daidō Moriyama, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus and Man Ray. From 16 March 4 THE WORLD AS IT GOES PARIS Inspired by Voltaire’s story The World As It Goes, where humanity ultimately replaces the gods, the Jean- Marie Gallais-curated exhibition at the Bourse de Commerce in Paris includes works by key names from the 1980s to the present: Cindy Sherman, Luc Tuymans, Damien Hirst and Fischli & Weiss, to name a few. 20 March – 2 Sept 5 ART DUBAI The annual art fair has grown from strength to strength as the leading contemporary art spectacle in the region. This long overdue, comprehensive retrospective at Tate Modern will showcase her foremost works created across her seven-decadelong practice in a myriad of media, together with archives of her peace campaigns as an activist. 15 Feb – 1 Sept 8 NAN GOLDIN BERLIN The work of Nan Goldin explores intimacy and pain, and her photographic storytelling remains a touchstone for multiple generations of artists and filmmakers, as this show proves. Already shown in Stockholm and Amsterdam, it travels to Berlin’s Neue Nationalgalerie and then to Pirelli HangarBicocca, Milan, and the Grand Palais, Paris in the following years. 23 Nov – 23 Feb 2025 10 9 VENICE BIENNALE The 60th edition of the Venice Biennale has an admirable mission: helmed by Adriano Pedrosa, a Brazilian art director (and firstever Biennale curator from a Latin American country), the biggest art event of the year will be a celebration of outsiders, with an eye toward dismantling the boundaries and perspectives that divide so many. 20 April – 24 Nov 10 LOUISE BOURGEOIS TOKYO The Mori Art Museum has been home to one of Louise Bourgeois’ “spider” pieces, Maman, for years, so it is fitting that this retrospective traces the French artist’s illustrious career, revolving around the notions of memory, maternal love and pain, with some of her paintings as yet unshown in East Asia. 25 Sept – 19 Jan 2025 97
