Clockwise, from above: The Finse Terrace; The Hangar; The Living Room Making waves for 2022, Viking will be launching two brand-new purpose-built Polar Class 6 expedition ships, Viking Octantis® and Viking Polaris®, both state-ofthe-art vessels that look to the future of cruise travel. The arrival of these vessels will bring another two elegant vessels to the Viking fleet. Designed by the nautical architects responsible for Viking ocean ships, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris are set to make their maiden voyages in 2022. Doubling as modern cruise ships and research vessels, both ships have the space to host up to 378 guests in 189 refined, wellappointed staterooms. The design has been tailored for expedition cruising, with straight bows, longer hulls and fin stabilizers to help the ships glide over waves, as well as ice-strengthened Polar Class 6 hulls for the safest travel and U-tank stabilizers that will significantly decrease rolling by up to 50% while stationary. The ships will minimize environmental impact, prioritizing the protection of the most remote regions in the world. The shape of the bow will also reduce fuel consumption, and a dynamic positioning system will allow the ships to hover over the seabed without needing to anchor. Both vessels will be outfitted with the latest expedition equipment. New additions on board will include The Hangar— an in-ship marina permitting the launch of small excursion craft and an 85-foot slipway allowing guests to embark RIBs (rigid inflatable boats) from a flat surface inside the ship, without getting wet. Other state-of-the-art expedition equipment include a fleet of military pro zodiacs designed for professional use in harsh climates. On board, there will be a fleet of two-seater Arctic-tested kayaks and two 12-seater convertible RIBs. The ships will also feature two six-guest yellow submarines with revolving seats and 270º spherical windows for once-in-alifetime underwater experiences. To take part in the onshore expeditions, guests will be provided with everything they need in their Viking Expedition Kit. This will contain boots, binoculars and waterproof pants. Guests will also be able to make use of complimentary trekking poles, snowshoes and skis. Also unique to these ships will be the onboard panoramic auditorium, The Aula, with a capacity for up to half the ships’ guests at one time. An excellent 106 VIKING.COM EXPLORE MORE

ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN venue for lectures and entertainment, The Aula is based on the design of the University of Oslo’s famed ceremonial hall where the Nobel Peace Prize was historically awarded to recipients. A first for polar expedition cruise vessels, all staterooms on board will offer a Nordic Balcony that converts into a viewing platform; by lowering the top of the glass, your stateroom will be transformed into a lookout. The ships will also be fitted with the modern Nordic Spa so you can take time to relax as you sail. At the stern will be the Aquavit Terrace and pools with a retractable glass dome, allowing guests to indulge in an al fresco swimming experience. Another place to explore will be the intimate Library, where guests can reflect with a good read. The Finse Terrace, found at the stern of the ship, will be a chic outdoor lounge area with warming lava rock “firepits.” And at the bow, guests will be able to take advantage of the Explorers’ Lounge, a two-deck space offering the perfect place to take in panoramic views through doubleheight windows. The ship will also offer an excellent array of dining options as well as room service. Other onboard facilities will include the 360° Promenade, where you can stroll around the entirety of the ship; the Aquavit Bar for cocktails and a smart atmosphere; and The Nordic Shop, with a range of mementos to mark every voyage. EXPEDITION EQUIPMENT The Hanger—A Viking exclusive, this unique, in-ship marina is sheltered from wind and waves. Easy Launch Access—Nine shell doors located around the ship enable launching from the most protected section of the ship. A Fleet of Military Pro Zodiacs—Designed for professional use in the harshest of environments, these Zodiac MilPro MK5s are reinforced throughout, yet comfortable enough for a day of exploring. Two Six-Seater Submarines—These large-capacity U-Boat Worx Sub 7 submarines comfortably accommodate six guests and a pilot for an incomparable undersea experience. The revolving seats and nearly 270° spherical windows offer an undistorted view in all directions for every guest. A Fleet of Two-Seater Kayaks—With suberb stability, these easy-to-operate, Arctic-tested kayaks have a pedal system that lets you glide through the water hands-free, maximizing your photo opportunities.
