ADVERTORIAL Making a dent in the universe It is possible to change the world Being a financial planner is possibly one of the best jobs ever! It is not a job. it is an adventure. Very few careers offer the opportunity to affect people on such a deep and fundamental level – their financial life. A financial planner can make a dent in the universe. Dark matter That opportunity, unfortunately, goes to waste if the engagement with a client was product-focused. A product-focused narrative is starved of meaning and connection. A client engagement in which an advisor focuses on moving a product acts like dark matter in the presence of reality… It destroys value. In search of meaning Wealth has different meanings for different people, is deeply personal and is intentional. To connect with people on a truly deeper level, you need to be able to have meaningful conversations with clients. Meaningful conversations start with the client and their goals and dreams. You can inspire your clients How do you change an engagement from manipulating clients to buy product to inspiring them to achieve their goals and dreams? How do you inspire clients to act? You start with what is important to the client. You ask about their goals and their dreams. You listen with sincerity; you guide them and you co-create their plan with them. Enter goal-based financial planning This is goal-based financial planning. Goalbased financial planning is a deeply personal experience for the client. It talks to their goals and dreams. Products become incidental to the discussion, incidental tools to enable or to protect the client’s financial life. Goal-based financial planning is about: • the client’s goals and dreams; and • helps them prioritise the financial elements of those goals and dreams; and • helps them to find an optimal plan to fund them; and • helps them to protect their plan; • all in the context of the client’s current personal economy. Enabling goal-based financial planning with financial engineering Your financial planning system can either enable goal-based financial planning or sabotage your efforts. If you want to build a goal-based financial planning practice, your system must be able to do the following: • provide an holistic view of the client’s goals and needs; and • visually show the impact of each goal and all other financial goals; and • allow the client to visually see the impact of their decisions now and in the future; and • empower the client to consider the trade-offs of his/her financial decisions; and • be flexible enough to facilitate co-creation of the client’s plan; • marry user experience with sophisticated financial engineering; • have the ability to model the client’s financial future, and • be intuitive and simple to use.
