NEWS Philips OLED “The Perfect Vision” TP Vision launches into the organic LED adventure… and much more Floris Minderman, TP Vision’s Product Manager – Europe – outlines the “big” news for Philips TV at IFA… This year we already launched quite a few models at the beginning of the year, and now here at IFA we are launching some more new sets, but the major launch will be a 55- inch Ambilight OLED TV – the first of its kind. OLED delivers great picture quality. For years, we have been at the forefront of bringing the best picture quality to the market, and we have also included those picture quality algorithms in the OLED, making sure that picture-wise it’s the perfect TV from our side. The unique differentiator WE REALLY SEE OLED AS THE FUTURE OF TV. will of course be Ambilight, which radiates coloured light by LEDs onto the wall behind the TV, creating a truly immersive experience, as the image goes beyond the screen. What other factors will make your OLED TV different from the other ones? It’s an Android TV, like our other TVs, and also runs Google Cast. This ensures that the users have access to hundreds of Android apps for the TV. It is unique in the OLED segment today. In terms of picture quality, it’s not just how the TV is set-up, it’s the specific chips that we produce and programme with proprietary algorithms that are unique to Philips and that ensure that the signal is processed in such a way as to ensure excellent picture quality no matter what kind of signal is being received. Android has the PlayStore, with generic apps – but in addition to this we are part of the Smart TV Alliance, in which we work together with other brands, collectively creating apps that are not available in the PlayStore, and that’s also where we are distinguishing ourselves compared to other brands, as the consumer has a very broad choice of apps. We know people are not watching much linear TV any more, and more and more people are watching “on demand” and catch up TV. For other apps that are not available for some reason on the Android TV platform, but it’s on your smartphone or tablet, or even you don’t feel like searching on the PlayStore, you can always use Google Cast and stream direct from your smartphone or tablet. OLED has some other major selling points… Yes, of course another major selling point for OLED as opposed to LCD is that when used for fast moving images of any kind, there is no image blur or judder. Furthermore contrast ratio is virtually infinite and black is really black. This is very visible in the in-store Floris Minderman Product Manager Europe, TP Vision © TP Vision environment. We really see OLED as the future of TV. What’s different about the remote control for this new TV? We started already a couple of years ago adding a QWERTY keyboard on the back of the remote, and now we have this in all our TVs from the 6000 series upwards. The remote is also voiceenabled, and it has a D-pad so you can swipe instead of pressing small buttons on the remote. The new OLED TV has a separate, quite visible sound bar. How important will the sound quality be with this new set? It’s very important because basically it’s out 9000 series – and people don’t expect just great picture quality but also great sound. They want the full package. That’s why we chose to have the aluminium speaker front with a total of six speakers – for mid and high frequencies, as well as a speaker on the back for the low frequencies. What do people get to see at your booth at IFA? We have the full range of our TVs, and while the focus is on OLED, people can also see the new 65 series, which for us is very important, because it brings picture quality we normally only had in the high end series… plus it’s a great design. So we are making high-end design and picture quality within the reach of a much broader public. We are launching a new 53 series – with a high gloss design and central neck stand, and it’s smart enabled. By launching this, 90% of our products are now smart Hall 22 Stand 101 www.ifa-international.org IFA International • Friday 2 nd September 2016 13
