NEWS Huawei Unveils

NEWS Huawei Unveils AI-equipped Processor at IFA Chinese company’s system-on-a-chip promises to shape the future In the final keynote at IFA, Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu showcased the Kirin 970 processor, the Chinese company’s new system-ona-chip (SoC). The Kirin 970 is the first mobile computer platform for artificial intelligence (AI) with a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU).The Kirin 970 has a heterogeneous computing architecture and is powered by an octa-core CPU and a next-generation GPU with 12 cores. Yu also confirmed that Huawei’s Mate 10 series of smartphones would use the chip, adding that this would be showcased at an event in Munich on October 16. He explained that Huawei combines the performance of the cloud with the speed and reactivity of native AI processing. The company has created completely new AI experiences, he said, which will transform the way we all interact with smartphones. He explained that the Kirin 970 can handle the same AI computing tasks faster, consuming even less energy and delivering 25x performance and 50x higher efficiency compared to a quad-core Cortex A-73. To highlight his point, he showed a demonstration of photo recognition, showing the Kirin 970's NPU processing images at 20 times the speed of a CPU. He also outlined how combining cloud-based AI and on-device AI can help to balance power efficiency and latency. Huawei perceives the Kirin 970 as an open platform for mobile AI and will makes the SoC accessible to developers and partners. Artificial intelligence presents a number of challenges for the entire value chain, said Yu, but he added that the benefits are profound. "The future of smartphones is on the brink of an exciting new era," said Yu. "Our formula for this is: Mobile AI = On-Device AI + Cloud AI. We want to turn smarter devices into intelligent devices in order Richard Yu, CEO Huawei Consumer Business Group to significantly improve the user experience. To achieve this, we are developing end-to-end capacities that enable co-ordinated development of chips, terminals and the cloud. The Kirin 970 is the first SoC in a series of innovations that will bring powerful AI features to our devices and make them stand out from the competition" Hall 6.2 Stand 203 ADVERTORIAL “Helmetphone” Redefines Safety for Bike Riders Two major awards won at Eurobike and IFA 2017 – worldwide interest in new product line Brian Zheng CEO, Livall IoT Technology Brian Zheng, CEO of Shenzhenbased manufacturer Livall IoT Technology, said he was delighted to have won the Smart Sports Device Innovation Award at IFA, which came just a few days after scooping another award at the Eurobike 2017 show. Livall IoT Technology was started in April 2014, when Zheng, with a keen interest in cycling, saw an opportunity to develop innovative safety helmets. First products were launched in mid-2015 and Zheng estimates that 100,000 units of what is billed as “the world’s first smart and safe safest cycling helmet” have been sold globally. “We have ambitious growth plans and want to sell 500,000 units in 2018. Sales have come from Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the United States, however, we are really looking to drive business in Europe,” said Zheng. The award-winning product, the Helmetphone (BH51M), features smart lighting (including indicators), hands-free calling, the ability to listen to music and an SOS alert function. The Helmetphone is paired to a smartphone, via Bluetooth, and controlled via a button that needs to be attached to the handlebars. “The jury of the Eurobike awards said that they liked the look of the stylish helmet with rear lights for added visibility,” says Zheng. “The jury added that the Bluetooth connectivity is excellent and that the sound is barely audible to bystanders, allowing riders to remain fully aware of noises from their surroundings.” “We are using the motto ‘Redefine Your Safety. The SOS feature, for when a user falls off their bike, automatically sends a text message to a contact – which is predetermined in the settings menu – informing them that there has been an incident” Hall 25 Stand 115 www.ifa-international.org IFA International • Monday 4 st September 2017 11
