TRADE NEWS GROWTH EXPECTATIONS ABOVE AVERAGE Werner Winkelmann and Klaus Lahrmann, respectively President and Managing Director of Euronics International, shared their views on this year’s IFA. By Emmanuel Poidevin Euronics International is a major pan-European player in both consumer electronics and white goods distribution and the figures speak for themselves. The company operates in 28 countries supplying more than 11500 outlets with a combined reach of more than 600 million consumers. Quite simply it is Europe’s biggest alliance of independent retailers. With 12.6 billion euros sales in turnover, they rank second overall ahead of Dixons, Expert and Kesa and just behind the dominant player MediaMarkt Saturn Chain. “With revenue growth of around 17%, Euronics International grew much faster in 2007 than the overall European market, which rose by a mere 4%. Thanks to the addition of Sinersis, one of the leading retail groups in Spain, we grew by 1900 stores and thus further consolidated our position. Sinersis generates annual revenues of around 1.1 billion euros,” said Klaus Lahrmann, Managing Director of Euronics International. “Overall revenues of discount stores and retail Werner Winkelmann President of Euronics International chains, with a combined turnover of 33.6 billion euros, and the specialist dealers linked in alliances, at 26.8 billion euros, are pretty much on an equal footing.” The main revenue generators of the alliance in revenue terms are consumer electronics, household appliances, PCs and multimedia devices. “Consumer electronics and white goods are the principal sources of revenue for Euronics International. Whilst the business in brown goods currently accounts for about 39%, the share of large household Klaus Lahrmann, Managing Director of Euronics International appliances is around 33%”, said Lahrmann. “Alongside the latest generation of LCD and plasma TV sets, consumers’ enthusiasm for mobile devices is at the forefront for many dealers. Mobile navigation and communication systems remain among the key growth drivers – while in consumer electronics, MP3 players, among other things displayed robust growth. Manufacturers are introducing numerous multimedia applications at this year’s IFA.
