ON LOCATION GREEN

ON LOCATION GREEN PARADISE The gardens at Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat FROM CANNES TO THE CAP D’ANTIBES Rebranded as a Regent Hotel and part of the IHG Hotels & Resorts portfolio, the Carlton Cannes, a Regent Hotel (carltoncannes.com) is – following a laborious restoration – glowing, with the stunning revival of this beloved century-old icon, mixing Art Deco heritage and ultra-contemporary new wings behind the ornate Belle Époque façade. With a refurbed lobby, seven new studios and a penthouse, 37 residential suites, and an inner courtyard transformed into a fragrant landscaped peristyle and garden, there’s even more to do now without ever leaving the property. Highlights include the city’s largest infinity pool with mini-cabanas, a new über-stylish bar, and Rüya, an Anatolian-style restaurant, plus a high-tech C Club fitness and spa complex with everything from boxing to Pilates. Or you can just lounge in your elegantly refurbed Decomeets-beach room, designed by Tristan Auer, and watch the sailboats go by. Right next door, the landmark Hôtel Martinez (hyatt.com), in the Unbound Collection by Hyatt, reopened with a dazzling multimillion-euro spruce-up that surprised Cannes Festival regulars, starting with the celebrated bar, entirely refurbished and an all-day outdoor eatery, Le Sud, on the ground level. But perhaps even more unique are the 16 Oasis suites, designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon, surrounded by walkways of lush greenery and tropical plants, plus a seven-treatment-room Spa by Carita. Add to that Rochon’s two new jaw-dropping penthouse suites, landscaped with olive trees and flowers, that span the entire 1,250sq m rooftop, named after French actress Isabelle Huppert and Cannes Fest notable Thierry Frémaux, with outstanding panoramic views. The Mondrian (accor.com), formerly the venerable Croisette landmark Grand Hotel, has gone resolutely modern. After a massive seven-month renovation, the hotel boasts all the fixings for a younger clientele who prefer a relaxed vibe to palace grandeur. And no wonder. The 75 spacious rooms are awash with Art Deco geometry and soft blues and cream, blending perfectly with the sea view from the terrace. Best bet: up on the city’s highest rooftop, the Mondrian’s two TIMELESS TREASURE GRAND-HÔTEL DU CAP-FERRAT, A FOUR SEASONS HOTEL (fourseasons.com) is an artful mix of Belle Époque grandeur and sleek modernity, which is one reason why this stately landmark seaside palace, spread across seven hectares of lush Mediterranean gardens on the Cap-Ferrat, continues to strike the perfect balance between old and new. In that same spirit of reinvention, the hotel’s latest addition to the property are two private villas, hidden away near the lighthouse: the gorgeously restored 1900s-built five-bedroom Villa Beauchamp, with a Cocteau-inspired mosaic floor bathroom, and the more intimate Provençal-style two-bedroom Villa Clair Soleil. Expect stylish interiors designed by Sybille de Margerie, private pools with pine-shaded decks, plus all ultraprofessional hotel services and comforts. Best bet: Work up an appetite at the iconic Club Dauphin’s seawater pool, then dive into a tantalising buffet lunch, headed by Michelin-star chef Yoric Tièche and pastry chef wizard Pierre-Jean Quinonero. GLAM GLOW REVIVAL After a €500-million investment to renovate hotels, Cannes is now in the final stages of an ecological project to revamp its iconic seafront boulevard, LA CROISETTE (cannesfrance.com). Beyond enlarging the beaches, the city is implementing energy-saving measures with a hightech underground thalasso-thermal system. Coming soon: almost two miles of pavement with gold-flecked red granite, Art Deco-style benches, and lush greenery. sunlit panoramic 11th-floor suites (think wooden decks, a Zen garden, and a whirlpool tub) are veritable showstoppers. Other exciting additions include French-Japanese fusion cuisine at Mr Nakamoto, cocktails on the palm-shaded grassy garden patio, and flavourful Italian cuisine at Hyde Beach, the lively beach club. For a great escape from Cannes’ buzzy Croisette, it’s only a short boat ride to La Guérite (cannes.restaurantlaguerite.com), a Mediterranean restaurant and edge-of-thewater beach club, tucked away on a tranquil CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: © ANANTARA PLAZA NICE, VIA TOLILA, © CARLTON CANNES, A REGENT HOTEL, THOMAS AUDIFFREN flat-rocked cove on the nearby island of Sainte-Marguerite. It was once a fisherman’s cabin where locals played pétanque; today, it’s the place for a languorous lunch among friends, with a Greek-inspired menu of grilled seafood, barbecued meats, and an impressive choice of wines, helmed by executive chef Yiannis Kioroglou. The ongoing Riviera surge of making the old new again has also extended to the Cap d’Antibes, where you step back into the Jazz Age at the 43-room Hôtel Belles Rives (bellesrives.com) Art Deco gem, formerly a villa where F Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald spent the summer of 1926, working on Tender is the Night. This elegant beachside classic, run by the Estène family since 1929, combines everything from beautifully preserved 1930s furnishings and vintage bow windows to a newly remodeled Fitzgerald Bar (try the signature Zelda Azzura, infused with peach liqueur). And you won’t go hungry. In addition to its superb Michelinstar restaurant, La Passagère, headed by chef Aurélien Véquaud, there’s also a beachside terrace serving haute snack food, plus an outstanding waterskiing school. Romantic, did you say? Come sunset, guests drift onto the terrace to watch the pink, coral and mauve reflections turn the Bay of Cannes into a painterly seascape of hot colours. Farther down the road, Cap d'Antibes Beach Hotel (capdantibes-beachhotel. com) is a discreet white low-slung 35-room boutique hotel that you might mistake for a contemporary private villa. Pourquoi? The total remodelling has transformed every aspect of this Relais & Châteaux stylish beachside retreat, newly acquired by Adresses Hotel Collection (La Ponche, Saint-Tropez).
