THE LAST WORD LARS ULRICH JULIAN RENTZSCH The Metallica drummer talks about life away from the band TRAVEL Sun worshipper or thrill-seeker? Defi nitely more of a thrillseeker. In my current headspace, my favourite is skiing, but back in the day I was a manic scuba diver. I’ve dived more or less all over the planet but have a special place in my heart for Micronesia, specifi cally Palau. There are so many diverse things to see – you can dive reefs, walls, wrecks, go drift-diving, there are endless shark encounters, and an incredible place called Jellyfi sh Lake. I’ve been a half-dozen times, and it’s hands-down my favourite spot. FOOD Big names or hidden gems? Both. Whenever we get a chance to travel around, I’m always up to exploring nextlevel, fi ne dining and seeing what creative and adventurist opportunities await us in those kinds of establishments. But sometimes the hidden gems in smaller, unexpected places can be equally rewarding. ACCOMMODATION Grandes dames, luxe design, or eminently private? Once again, a little bit of everything. When you travel as much as we do, you end up with your favourite spots in specifi c cities, often hotels that are familiar and you’ve had a memorable relationship with. ARCHITECTURE Classical or modern? Modern. I love Mid-Century Modernism and I’m also a big fan of Minimalism. I appreciate how in a lot of bigger European cities older buildings are fused together with modern architecture, which then creates an interesting and unique aesthetic. ENTERTAINMENT Good book or big screen? Defi nitely big screen all the way. Going to see movies, especially in a big cinema with lots of people, is hands down my favourite escape from the day-to-day. STYLE Latest fashion or smart casual? Smart casual, thank you very much for asking. When I fi nd something that’s comfortable and I enjoy wearing it, I prioritise that over any kind of outward statement. FUTURE PLANS Keep on making music or spreading your wings in different directions? I love making music with the fellas, creating albums and going out and playing to the Metallica family all over the world. And, thankfully, we are branching out into fi nding ways to connect with fans through beverages, clothing collaborations, video games, comic books, and other experiences. 90 NetJets
