It recently expanded to a total of 37 spacious tents – complete with private, hotspring-fed pools, plush king-size beds, bathrooms with copper soaking tubs, and indoor and outdoor showers – including several new multiroom tents ideal for families and groups. The end of 2021 brought the 73ha Hacienda AltaGracia, Auberge Resorts Collection (aubergeresorts.com) to the Nicoya Peninsula, along with its 50 stylish one- and two-bedroom casitas with private plunge pools and the vaunted spa, The Well, where guests can experience integrated holistic health and wellness treatments and consultations, as well as experience the hydrotherapy tub, thermal suite, healing garden and outdoor ranchos where various movement classes are hosted. Guests can enjoy a freshsqueezed juice or coffee from the resort’s own plantation, go horseback riding or hiking and even rope-climb to the top of the rainforest canopy. The resort also hosts wellness experts for multiday retreats or one-off programmes. HOTELS ON THE HORIZON Even with so many luxe resorts already in Costa Rica, the northwest province of Guanacaste will see (at least) three big highend hotel openings over the next few years. In 2024, SIX SENSES PAPAGAYO (sixsenses. com) will debut on a site that stretches from the highest point of the Guanacaste archipelago down to a forested beachfront. There will be 41 secluded pool villas and 31 residences, along with extensive Six Senses wellness programming and a beautiful spa and fitness centre. An organic farm located in the heart of the property will inspire the chef’s menus and signature spa treatments. NEKAJUI, A RITZ-CARLTON RESERVE RESIDENCE (ritzcarlton. com), a partnership with Peninsula Papagayo private club and resort community, will also launch in 2024. Designed by Luxury Frontiers and SB Architects, there will be 36 villa and estate residences and 107 hotel rooms that are divided into three zones. The Classic Zone has modern interpretations of traditional, hacienda-type buildings; the Transitional Zone features typical architecture found in the surrounding region; and an Organic Zone boasts treehouse-style structures inspired by the natural environment. In 2025, the WALDORF ASTORIA GUANACASTE (hilton.com) will open with 190 rooms and 25 residences as part of the Cacique Costa Rica community, which will offer retail, residences, and wellness experiences on Guanacaste’s Cacique peninsula. Boasting panoramic views overlooking the ocean, Waldorf Astoria Guanacaste will include “El Pueblo”, the lobby area and hub, a signature restaurant and bar, a gelato shop, a holistic wellness centre with a state-of-the-art gym, movement studio, outdoor yoga, and lap and thermal pools, and a cenote-inspired spa with eight treatment rooms, plus three outdoor treatment rooms emulating a treehouse.
