The resulting ballet was premiered at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1984. Britten’s work, written for piano, string quartet and string orchestra, was inspired by the composer’s first love interest, but withdrawn for many years after its second performance. The work is founded on the last lines of Keats's unfinished poem Hyperion. Mnemosyne, having witnessed the defeat of the Titans led by Hyperion, deserts the Titans for Delos. She sees the birth of Apollo and reveals his destiny, before Apollo casts off his mortal form. 30 minutes

The story is a simple and lighthearted one of young love flying in the face of parental disapproval, and in true fairy-tale fashion everything works out in the end. The score is lively, energetic and witty, artfully intertwining familiar melodies with folk tunes. Since its premiere, this version, commissioned to match Frederick Ashton’s peerless choreography and Osbert Lancaster’s colourful stage designs, has been performed worldwide and is in many respects now considered the ‘traditional’ rendering. 100 minutes Gustav Holst The Golden Goose Full version: vocal and instrumental scores on hire 9780193368989 Orchestral version: conductor’s score and parts on hire 9780193647442 picc, 2fl, 2ob, ca, 2cl, 2bsn, 2hn, 2tpt, 3tbn, tba, timp, 1 (or 2) perc, cel, str This choral ballet is set to verse by Holst’s pupil Jane Joseph from Grimm’s fairy tale. It tells the story of a princess who could not laugh, narrating attempts by a group of mummers to entertain her, until finally a young man succeeds and wins her hand. Its charming music is replete with folk-influenced melodies and colourful orchestration that vividly illustrate the story. 30 minutes The Morning of the Year Vocal and instrumental scores on hire 9780193369009 picc, 2fl, 2ob, ca, 2cl, 2bsn, cbn, 4hn, 2tpt, 3tbn, tba, timp, 1perc, org, str Originally commissioned by the BBC, this choral ballet is themed around spring, rebirth, nature and the English rites surrounding them. Complex in its counterpoint, mixed metres, and combinations of more than one key at once, the music is underpinned by English folk influences throughout. Each movement evokes a different atmosphere, the mood varying from serene and lyrical to declamatory and full of rhythmic vitality. 25 minutes ed.
