Its Overture may be described in the same way, with expressive melodies set alongside witty parodies. The orchestration is vivid and colourful, punctuating the overture’s comic moments and lending a luscious quality to the more Romantic passages. It consists of four movements, vividly encapsulating the drama and tragedy offered by the full opera. The first movement, ‘The Trojans’, draws on music from opening scenes, depicting the first meeting of Troilus and Cressida. This is followed by a playful and skittish ‘Scherzo’, characterised by Pandarus, where he orchestrates bringing the titular characters together. The third movement, entitled ‘The Lovers’, carries the main emotional burden of the work, and features some of the most passionate lines from the second act of the opera, including a tumultuous Allegro tempestuoso ‘Storm Interlude’. The ‘Finale’ opens with the gloomy and heartbroken lament of Cressida, captive in the Greek camp, before a sudden flourish of trumpets begins the escalation to the final tragedy – the stabbing of Troilus, and suicide of Cressida. 35 minutes William Walton 16 minutes 42 42
