It is a work that, in a full production, combines painting, literature, music and dance. The work was inspired by William Blake’s illustrations of the Book of Job, and includes quotations from the King James Bible. The result is a musical masterpiece, combining the ancient and the modern: Vaughan Williams’s earlier style is in evidence, including tranquil pastoral melodies, but the work also anticipates the composer’s later style. Roy Douglas Death of Tintagiles Conductor’s score and parts on hire 9780193388505 ob, cl, hn, str Vaughan Williams composed this melancholic and darkly atmospheric score as incidental music for a 1913 production of the Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlinck’s play The Death of Tintagiles. In the play, Tintagiles’s family has been murdered by the Queen and, although he tries to escape, he is ultimately murdered by the Queen too. Marionettes are used in place of actors, indicating that the characters are merely puppets of fate. The plot is based on The Faerie Queene by the Elizabethan poet Edmund Spenser, and depicts the triumph of good over evil. St George (the Red Cross Knight) and Una (Truth) face the deception of the evil magician Archimago (personifying Hypocrisy) as they venture through the Palace of Pride. After trials and tribulations, the ballet reaches its climax in the fifth scene when St George brings Una to the House of Holiness and pledges himself to England.
