This Day unites five very different texts, both sacred and secular, in an exploration of man's relationship with the world and with God. Opening with an optimistic F sharp major setting of Emily Dickinson's 'Bring me the sunset in a cup', the work progresses through the stages of a day (or, indeed, a life): 'Awake, my soul!' (Thomas Ken), 'This Day' (Jewish text, adapted Chilcott), 'The Bright Field' (R.S. Thomas), and 'O Lord, support us' (John Henry Newman). This is powerfully evocative music embracing a range of moods and styles, with moments of joyful optimism, spiritual enlightenment, and poignancy.

This Day for online perusal only for SA and piano Composer’s note This is the fifth piece I have written for the Crescent City Choral Festival in the beautiful city of New Orleans, hosted by Cheryl Dupont and the New Orleans Children’s Chorus. They have hosted eight festivals, but in 2006, due to Hurricane Katrina, the festival was cancelled. The New Orleans Children’s Chorus and the festival survived only through Cheryl and the choir’s courage and the generosity of many friends and supporters in the choral community throughout the United States and elsewhere. I wrote this piece for the rebirth of the festival in 2007 on the theme of the day and all it brings: living every moment with energy and awareness. Duration: c.10 minutes Contents 1.
