The work was commissioned by MidAmerica Productions, and the first performance was conducted by the composer. The first recording of Magnificat in the version with orchestra was made in 1991 by the Cambridge Singers and the City of London Sinfonia with soprano soloist Patricia Forbes, conducted by the composer. It is available on the Collegium label (COLCD 114 and CSCD 504). The version with chamber orchestra has been recorded by the Choirs of St Albans Cathedral and Ensemble DeChorum, conducted by Andrew Lucas. It is available on the Naxos label (8.572653). Approximate duration: 40 minutes
