This superb volume contains twelve varied pieces arranged for organ by celebrated recitalist Thomas Trotter. A selection of orchestral, piano, and vocal originals, including works by Delibes, Gounod, Grieg, Eric Coates, and Madeleine Dring, has been transcribed with a finely honed sense of idiom so as to be manageable on most organs. All the pieces are short and suitable for use as recital encores, but they would also be effective as programmed items in recitals of lighter works, and in some cases as church voluntaries

Introduction Encores have always been a feature of my regular concerts in Birmingham, and, now that I have reached my 40th year as City Organist, this seems like a good time to put together a collection of them. The encore is the point in a concert when the artist steps outside the prescribed plan and performs an extra piece which complements (or subverts) the music already performed in the main programme. Pianists traditionally end their concerts with several encores, while a few never play any—it was the legendary pianist Artur Schnabel who famously said ‘Applause is a receipt, not a bill.’ But for those performers who like to acknowledge the applause, an encore is the perfect musical thank you. Needless to say, I always have one up my sleeve for when a concert goes well (and especially for when it doesn’t!), thereby introducing an element of surprise. This album of encore arrangements encompasses several nationalities and genres, including piano gems by Grieg and MacDowell, orchestral favourites by Delibes and Strauss, and British light music by Eric Coates, with some American humour provided by Leroy Anderson. Most of the arrangements are intended for an instrument with at least three manuals, although some of them can be adapted to fit more modest resources. Players are at liberty to adjust the registrations according to taste, and to alter more difficult passages to suit their own technique. The process of turning my handwritten manuscripts into professionally printed scores has been very satisfying, and I hope your audiences will be surprised and delighted by the results. for online perusal only THOMAS TROTTER Birmingham April 2022 iv
