I NEWS I Rodolphe

I NEWS I Rodolphe Lameyse Vinexposium CEO © Philippe Labeguerie © Philippe Labeguerie Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris to continue its journey to internationalisation, according to Vinexposium CEO Rodolphe Lameyse said at a press conference at the end of Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris 2023 3,387 exhibitors 20% floor space and 25% international exhibitors more than in 2022, from 42 producer countries 36,334 visitors +41% on 2022, including 38% international attendees from 149 countries. 85% increase in international visitors As Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris 2023 drew to a close, Rodolphe Lameyse, Vinexposium CEO, offered a positive outlook for the show in the French capital and for other Vinexpo events across the globe. Mr Lameyse said the growth in the number of exhibitors at Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris was mainly driven by international exhibitors, while the increase in visitor numbers was primarily because more international buyers were attending. "This is a very international show already and it will be more and more," he said. "We want this to be the rendezvous for wine and spirits. "We're not just here to fill purchase orders. Purchase orders are important, but wine deserves more than that." Another positive aspect of this year's show, Mr Lameyse said, was that a similar level of interest was shown by attendees in all the halls. "All three, all four, all five, all six, none of them were more packed than others," he said. "Generally it was quite balanced." Looking to the future, Vinexpo Asia will take place from 23 to 25 May at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore and Mr Lameyse said he expected, with international travel restrictions with respect to China having eased, "many Chinese buyers will be able to fly to Singapore". Also in Asia, an exciting development this year are Les Vinexpo Meetings, which will take place in Seoul in South Korea on October 5-6 this year. As part of this event, around 70 to 80 wineries will visit South Korea for meetings. "Korea is drinking more and more and more wines and the younger generation is leading this trend," Mr Lameyse said. Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris 2024 will be back in the French capital from February 12 to 14 next year and Mr Lameyse said the event would be "even more ambitious for international". "The future is to make sure we grow the show internationally and to [have] more international buyers" © Philippe Labeguerie VINEXPOSIUM REVEALS FIRST EDITION OF GOLDEN V AWARDS TO BE HELD IN 2024 The scheme will recognise the most ambitious and responsible business initiatives in the wine and spirits industry worldwide. I NEWS I Sake brewery founded in same year as French Revolution presents stylish collaboration Tanaka Shuzoten, founded in Kami Machi, Miyagi, is presenting its range of sakes at Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris. These are produced following what's known as the "old method", with water from the Ohu Mountain Range and locally grown rice. These 200-year-old techniques called Kimoto and yamahai ensures a natural fermentation process without added chemicals. Speaking at the trade show, President of Tanaka Shuzoten, Mr Kunihiko Nagai, said: "Our objective is to make people think of Saké as the equivalent of having a glass of wine." The brewery, which was founded in the same year as the French Revolution (1789), launched a collaboration dubbed The Tanaka 1789 X Chartier Sake Blend 001, with French Sommelier François Chartier. Together, they were able to produce six new sake bases after developing an innovative blending process. This produces sakes with more complexity and structure, which are more aromatic and umami dense. The stylish black bottles, created by the renowned New York-based design agency Force Majeure, are the brewery's high end range, targeted at Michelin starred and gastro restaurants. Tanaka Shuzoten's hand-crafted sake is already being exported to a long list of countries around the world, with many new additions coming up later this year, including the United States, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and Israel. The brewery has received Vegan and Kosher Certification and is in the process of obtaining the Organic Certification. While rice is commonly cultivated across Japan, many sake breweries were established in cooler regions. Miyagi, situated in the northwestern part of the Sendai plain, is one of the most famous locations because of its climate and fertile soils Biodynamic certified wines shine at Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris 2023 Demeter, a private certification for biodynamically produced food, cosmetics and textiles, attended the trade show with 21 Domaines from France and Italy. The worldwide movement of biodynamic agriculture, a holistic, ecological and ethical approach, works with farmers across 65 countries, covering 230,000 hectares of land. There are 1,289 wine estates which are Demeter certified or in the process of converting, including 651 in France. The organisation's numbers have been growing quickly with the arrival of a new generation of wine makers who are keen to practise environmentally friendly farming methods. Biodynamic wines have also surged in popularity among wine professionals and consumers over the past few years. Demetre certified wines must meet in-depth requirements from the vineyard to the cellar in order to obtain the healthiest possible grapes and avoid any additives during the winemaking process. must follow. This includes limiting doses of copper to fight cryptogamic diseases and sulphites, prohibiting the use of exogenous yeasts and environmentally harmful materials for containers and capping. It also asks winemakers to commit 10% of their farmland to promoting biodiversity by preserving its natural habitat such as forests, meadows, tree plantations or hedges. Demeter certified wines are easily recognised thanks to the organisation's orange or flower logo. The organisation believes that intervening as little as possible in the winemaking process helps produce better quality wines, which truly reflect the terroir and vintage. The level of certification may vary for the same winery depending on the batches and vintage, particularly in areas where the climate varies The certification goes a step further than organic, with a number of additional requirements producers THE DAILY • THURSDAY 23 RD FEBRUARY 2023 • 3
