Vinexpo Hong Kong 2016 PRACTICAL GUIDE LEVEL 1 LEVEL 3 Level 3 / Stand JK-50-9 Level 3 / Stand N-64

EDITORIAL Richard Barnes Editor-in-chief The Chinese Lion Smiles Upon Vinexpo HK! If the effervescence of yesterday’s opening ceremony at Vinexpo Hong Kong was anything to go by, the Chinese Lion is definitely smiling upon the wine industry. Vinexpo’s senior executives, along with Hong Kong’s chief tourism authorities and the Italian Ambassador to Beijing wended their way through the show (complete with dancing Chinese Lion), with evident high spirits from the exhibitors… pardon the pun. Day by day, Chinese consumers are growing in sophistication… and also quite rapidly in numbers! Sales of imported bottled wines in 2015 were up a dazzling 37% on the previous year - reaching almost US.9bn. The biggest winner has been Australia, with +57% volume and +78% value Y/Y. In this new scenario, based very much on individual drinkers, education and information for distribution channel and consumers are key when it comes to growing the industry. To whit, Vinexpo Hong Kong is playing a vital role. The growth of the industry will rely on the broader and continuing education of individual buyers, along with encouragement by retailers and specialists to try new products. It will also be fostered by the growing interest of the likes of Alibaba – and the Tmall marketplace, who are creating a new business model to enable brands to service hundreds of millions of consumers. It could well be a new quantum leap (see related interview – P6).
