Wie is E R I C ?
En voor de zoveelste keer leg ik uit; “dat Eric
geen Eric is, maar E.R.I.C. Okee, het is dus
duidelijk dat ERIC geen persoon is, maar wat
is het dan wel?”
ERIC is ...
Voluit gezegd, het European Rotaract
Information Centre, een districtsoverkoepelende
organisatie die samenwerking tussen
Europese Rotaractclubs en Rotaracters wil
bevorderen. Elk Europees land waar Rotaract
actief is heeft een ERIC-vertegenwoordiger.
Deze vertegenwoordigers vergaderen onder
andere drie keer per jaar ergens in Europa,
waarvan één keer tijdens de EUCO en hebben
veel contact via de mail.
It’s Your turn now!
Last year Europe had the chance to “Get in
Touch with the Dutch” in Amsterdam, and
now it’s time that “wE Unite!” in Budapest!
Yes, we are talking about the EUCO 2004, the
biggest annual event of Rotaract on the
oldest continent. The conference is taking
place between April 28 and May 2, and includes
the very night when 10 new countries
join the European Union, among them the
host of EUCO 2004: Hungary.
This 1100 year old country in the geographical
heart of Europe can offer many interesting
programs, for which even a whole month
would not be enough. The long history of
Hungary has left many legends, buildings,
customs and relics. It was only in 896 A.D.
when the seven Hungarian tribes conquered
the Carpathian Basin. In 1001 our first king,
St. Stephan was crowned with a crown that
can still be visited in our parliament even
today.
Following long centuries of event-full history
that included Mongol, Turkish, Austrian and
Soviet rule Hungary became independent
Binnen ERIC wordt veel gesproken om
samenwerking te bevorderen tussen
Rotaracters. De taken van ERIC zijn dan ook
om dat mogelijk te maken. De mensen binnen
ERIC verzamelen informatie en stellen
deze beschikbaar aan de Rotaracters in hun
land. Door middel van het stimuleren van
Europese weekends, meetings, conferenties
wordt er een ontmoetingsplaats gecreëerd
voor de individuele Rotaracter.
Palma
De laatste meeting was half januari in Palma
de Mallorca. Een zeer matige opkomst,
slechts tien afgevaardigde ERIC-vertegenwoordigers,
waren aanwezig in de mooie

to join NATO and to join the EU. We
became a full member of NATO in 1998 and
2004 will be the year when “wE Unite.”
Big celebrations are expected for the days
surrounding the official date of May 1st,
2004 – the middle of EUCO – even though
not all citizens support this membership. The
majority voted in favor of it, but the turn
out at the referendum was very low, less than
48%.
Among the young people the enthusiasm and
the expectations are rather high, as most of
us speak at least one foreign language, i.e.:
English, German, French, Italian and Spanish.
It’s interesting that in the last few years the
prices in general have reached the EU standard,
while the salaries remain among the
lowest among the new EU-25.
On the other hand this controversy does not
exist in the world of Rotary/Rotaract. District
1910 is one of the only two Districts in the
hoofdstad van het schitterende Spaanse
eiland. Zaterdag vond een zoals gebruikelijk
lange vergadering (6 uur) plaats waar alle
punten de revue passeerden. Van het onderhouden
van de website tot de country-report
en van best-service-project tot de EUCO.

namely: Eastern-Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina,
Croatia, Hungary and Slovenia. This
set up has proved very successful especially
within Rotaract and have brought many
international projects as well as parties and
friendships. wE as Rotaractors in District
1910 have Unite-d already. Now, it’s Your
