LIGHTER THAN AIRQUICK, FAST AND EASYBy: Herman BurtonThis is the aileron with the one sid eof the hingeinstalled. The other side is ounted in the wing.Just the other day a friend of mine sent me alink to the Grumman historical page (I workedfrom Grumman for 8 years). Check the pageout, it is very interesting.http://www.grummanpark.org/runway1.htmI thought I would end the column with an oldcartoon. I use to produce a column back in ’96called “Lighter Than Air”. I thought would sharethis one once again.I thought I would end the column with an oldcartoon. I use to produce a column back in ’96called “Lighter Than Air”. I thought would sharethis one once again. If anyone else has some humor they would liketo share, just drop me an email and lets seewhat we can do.This month I plan on having the usual 30 minutebusiness meeting and will then show a 30minute video on the P-47. This video has actualwing camera shots and is very interesting.See ya at the field.MikeAnd did I mention inexpensive? Yes, that, too.For much less than you can purchase an ARF,you can buy a kit, build it, and have it flying forless than the ARF costs in the box. And thetime spent is not nearly as much as you mightthink.Last fall, wanting to get into the air quickly aftermy favorite little fun fly airplane nosed into theground at a high rate of speed, I bought a GreatPlanes Reactor ARF for $179.95 plus tax. Theinformation on the box stated the plane couldbe ready to fly in as little as a couple of hours.“Simple”, thinks I. So, off I went and bought it.Well, a couple of hours went by, then a couplemore, and after that a few more, and before Iknew it, I had spent the weekend trying to getthe plane ready for flight. So, instead of “a fewhours”, it took the entire weekend. Plus a littlemore. The Reactor is an exceedingly thin airfoil plane,is basically built like a pattern plane, and is reputedto be able to do 3-D maneuvers. With thehuge control throws available (several inches onailerons and elevator, for example), I am sure itcan do 3-D maneuvers, if that is one’s preference.I am not a 3-D pilot, and have put theplane into the hangar until the next swap meet, where I am sure it will find a nice new home withsomeone else.
