2. People 2.1 Working Conditions and Meaningful Work VMI assesses the impact of its business decisions and business practices on people inside and outside the organization. The quality of both the organization and its employees is a decisive factor in the success and growth of VMI. We set high standards for our employees – all of whom have a clear idea of what is expected of them, how to contribute actively and how to improve continuously. VMI’s Code of Conduct mandates how employees are to conduct themselves in a variety of situations. VMI communicates its CSR policy to its employees. 2.1.1 Sustainable Employability It is also VMI’s duty to be a good employer. VMI considers its employees to be its greatest asset, and thus invests heavily in them. VMI feels responsible for its employees. In recent years, VMI’s HR policy focuses on sustainable employability. We provide employees with a safe and healthy working environment: e.g., well-equipped ergonomic work stations, and support of an external company doctor and physiotherapist providing on-call treatment and advice. We regularly advise employees on safety measures to prevent accidents. HR overview Fte VMI Group VMI takes the health of its employees seriously. All employees being healthy, and being able and willing to work for VMI for the long term, are very important to VMI. As before, in 2016 we strongly promoted sports activities and health – and those sports activities are also good team building sessions. As well, in 2016, VMI offered all VMI employees in Epe a personal health check. An external consultant carried out the health check at VMI facilities during working hours. VMI encourages people to invest in themselves by continuing their professional studies. VMI provides excellent opportunities for personal challenge, development and growth. Every year, employees in various disciplines follow training programs. VMI provides a secure environment for employees’ data. 6
2.1.2 Safety VMI keeps its emergency response plan up to date. In Epe, VMI’s emergency response team (ERT) consists of fifty-three people. Each member of the ERT completes a year-long training program. Among other things, their training includes firefighting, evacuation and reanimation. In November 2016, VMI and the Fire Department of the municipality of Epe participated in a large emergency training event. With the Fire Department, we evaluated the results and set specific learning objectives. VMI gives safety and safety procedures constant priority in its factories. We record and analyze all safety incidents and near-incidents. To help prevent accidents, we periodically distribute newsletters with safety standards and advice. Large emergency training event November 2016. 2.1.3 Lean Lean principles are widely established at VMI, and VMI has set up lean systems throughout its organization. In 2016, VMI offered a broad lean office training program, continuing through February 2017. The program trains employees in how to chair a meeting efficiently. It trains employees who use computers in how to handle email efficiently. The program has trained almost 140 employees, and has produced eleven new lean office experts. As well, the program will include newly hired employees. VMI has eleven employees following Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt training. In 2016, as part of its Lean Six Sigma organization, VMI gave Champion training to members of the Executive Board and the Management Team. Applying that training, they brought Hoshin Kanri planning to VMI, also in 2016. Training Within Industry (TWI) Job Instruction (JI) is another element of lean at VMI. TWI JI trained ten employees to take the trainer role. In turn, those ten trainers gave that training to more than 100 other employees. Also in 2016, twenty VMI employees participated in fifteen lean network meetings. The purpose was to learn about and to improve in information sharing. The result of the meetings was fifteen improvement projects at VMI. 7
